My avatar is an AMD AM286 an intel 80286 clone. IBM demanded that the suppliers of all of the components in their computers license the design to a second manufacturing source, Intel licenced their design to an at the time relatively small company called Advanced Micro Devices. AMD took this design and later designed the AMD K5, the precursor to all modern AMD processors. If it hadn't been for the AM286 AMD would have never become a really successful company and it is likely that AMD's role in modern processors would be done by Cyrix or Texas Instruments. AMD is actually fairly old being founded in 1969 (Intel was founded 1968 ). AMD prior to designing PC processors designed calculator processors (like the AM2900).
