    8040 Industrial Controller Board

Can't help you there, I'm Mac/Linux only. It might be possible to run my stuff in the "Linux box" that Windows has now, but I won't go there, and in any case it won't be gooey.

    Sizzling Model 1 monitor

One silly suggestion is to turn off the lights in the room to see if there are any sparks to go along with the sizzling.

    Sizzling Model 1 monitor

B is the flyback transformer. A and B are the dangerous bits, and the CRT itself has capacitance which can zap you hard. A is usually covered with a rubber cap, I can see the outline of the rubber cap, but it looks a bit naked at the connector thingy, like it broke and fell off somehow. Not...

    Tektronix 4052A Screen CRT dead

Somebody made that ugly bodge... and didn't even try to use a socket? Disgusting. At least a 7402 would have the same type of gates, and pointing the right way too.

    VTECH Basic Language Help Required

    Isn't the pre-computer 1000 literally a binary-patched TRS-80 basic? That's Microsoft basic, a little older than the CP/M version. so yes, x=int(rnd(0)*n)+1

Hello my old friend - TRS-80 Model 1

The worst part of which is that it took them 4 extra bytes of code to do it that way.

Looking for Sample 8080 Assembly or Machine language listings for simple programs ...

an alternate version of the above with a few differences that you should become familiar with ; fill memory from 0C00-0FFF with zero ORG 0100H ; start of Transient Program Area where CP/M programs run start: LXI H,0C00H ; start address of memory block MVI C,0 ; value to fill memory...

    USB-RS232 converter/adapter

IMHO the best of all of USB serial adapters is Keyspan (now sold by Tripp-Lite), they do everything including sending break, and they will even support very old versions of their adapters, if you should find one. (They made one with dual mini-DIN-8 Macintosh ports in the '90s, that still worked...

How could I design the world's cheapest (8-bit?) computer?

The "cheapest" computer will depend on how you make it. If you already have a bunch of chips, then you just need to add time. And as others have pointed out, even a case for it is a cost that you can't ignore, even if you build it yourself. It's not free, but by the time you're ready, you will...

The ever-increasing prices of vintage computer parts on the internet...

I prefer to find good deals first, and let that decide what to work on. But then I like tinkering and repairing and building. A few years ago I ended up with over a dozen DIP-40 68HC11D0 CPUs, for under 40 bucks, and dammit I'm going to make a computer from one of them. It'll probably end up as...

    Help Identifying a Vintage Board

It has connectors on both "ends", and the edge connectors are not very wide. It might be intended to be horizontal. And the edge connectors are 34 and 20 pins, suspiciously the same as MFM/RLL hard drives. Don't be fooled by the "93" on the silkscreen, the chips are 86-87, and the EPROM has an...

What is this? Post Photos of Mystery Items Here (vintage computers only)

I didn't look too hard, but didn't see anything that looked obviously like a CPU, though I did see RAM and ROM. And then there's half the cards on the backplane slots having unique keying. I guess 100 bucks was kind of okay, I dunno. But either it's a got a discrete CPU, or it's that 28-pin...

Looking for Sample 8080 Assembly or Machine language listings for simple programs ...

This is why ever since I was a kid in '79, my favorite thing to do is disassemble code. I learned a lot from looking at TRS-80 Level II BASIC, there's a lot of good code in there. In a way, I learned assembly language directly from Bill Gates. If you're looking for simple programs, they're...

When the DB9 and the DB25 are too fat to fit..

If you're asking what I think you're asking, the only "earless" D-9 connectors that I'm familiar with are the ones for Atari and Sega controllers. If you're just trying to get the connection out of a tight spot, try a controller extension cable for Sega Genesis, they should pass all nine pins.

    MC68HC11EVB is now working

So I tried both a new crystal and an external oscillator, and it was still flaky. Oh well, in the future I plan to use a different CPU chip instead of this board anyhow.

    MC68HC11EVB is now working

So if you watched the above video, you might have noticed that I pressed the reset button a lot. That's because for some reason, it doesn't start up easily. Well now I know a bit more. I put a scope on one of capacitor pins next to the crystal, and when it's running I can see the 8MHz. When the...

    Atlantis MCG-85

Yes, I specifically made a "Z8085" mode for my disassembler because I prefer those mnemonics. 8080 mnemonics were chosen to make it easier to write assemblers, back in the days when Fortran was still popular. The words "Fortran" and "string handling" are frightening when combined. The general...

    Atlantis MCG-85

I only noticed this a few days ago, and I really like disassembling monitor programs, so here you go. I'm not very impressed by the coding style, rather inefficient, and its command syntax is somewhat clunky. But I guess it gets the job done. A dump of 2.4C and its assembler ROM would be nice...

The ever-increasing prices of vintage computer parts on the internet...

My G3 "Pismo" Powerbook basically fell apart inside in about 2-3 years of use, yes, back in the '00s when it was new. All the little plastic posts in the case (that the motherboard was mounted to) broke off.

Need Motorola M68MM01A Monoboard Micromodule 1A manual

I'm planning to rig up an adapter board to make it work with a MEK6800D1 keyboard (because of course there was no reason for Motorola to ever use the same pinout on two 50-pin edge connectors to a PIA), then try to add a 32K SRAM. I have two of those and I'd like to hook up the other to a...
