IBM 5120 - Strange "ABCDEFGHJKLMN" error

My IBM 5120 was working fine earlier this morning. When I turned it on a short while ago, I encountered this error: ABCDEFGHJKLMN Also, the "Process Check" light stays on (when it should turn off after the boot-up process is complete). Now I am unable to complete the boot process to get to...

Does anyone have a working 8-inch disk drive?

Just thought I would share with everyone...I went to InfoAge's workshop last Saturday and worked with VintageVolts to create disk images for my IBM 5120. Of the 6 disk images we made, 5 of them are working! I attached a video of executing UTIL DIR, D40 to read the files on a disk in drive #2...

IBM 5110-3 / 5120 8inch drives, disk timing error and Process Check issue

Any progress on this? I am encountering the exact same problem on my IBM 5120: ERR 013. I thought the low-level format command INITIAL would be part of the code stored in ROS (aka ROM).

Does anyone have a working 8-inch disk drive?

The disks have not arrived yet, but I purchased a set of brand new BASF and Xerox, both DS/DD. If there is a different brand you recommend please let me know.

Does anyone have a working 8-inch disk drive?

Thanks for your feedback. For now, all I can do is try and see if InfoAge’s method will work. If this fails, then I will have to investigate how the image files were created (if that’s even possible), or continue searching the Internet and forums for people who may be able to assist.

Does anyone have a working 8-inch disk drive?

I own an a fully functional IBM 5110-3 (aka 5120) with dual 8-inch disk drives. Based on my research, DS/DD 8-inch disks will work, but I will need to format them first. I am in communication with InfoAge and they have offered their assistance. As far as the hardware I would eventually need to...

Does anyone have a working 8-inch disk drive?

I appreciate the offer, but I do not have the technical skill to rebuild these drives (wish I did). I am glad you are still holding onto to these. Maybe in the future someone will want to restore them.

IBM PC Convertible - massive power surge need help!

In my haste to start a thread, I neglected to write some important details in the original post. Verault is right, I need to explain what happened more carefully. Initially, the Convertible was functioning fine, including battery power. I attached the Convertible printer, and the printer was...

IBM PC Convertible - massive power surge need help!

Gosh…after reading your posts I think I may have to find a new motherboard entirely. There was a battery inside and it still retained a charge. I successfully ran the Convertible on battery power without any issues until the accident happened. I did use a “brick” that came with the Convertible...

IBM PC Convertible - massive power surge need help!

I had a fully functional IBM PC Convertible when I believe I must have experienced a power surge. I heard a "pop" inside and then smelled something burning (no smoke). I disassembled the Convertible and I think I found the problem. If you look at the chip circled in red, it looks like part of...

Best way to protect vintage PC hardware: TVSS?

Based on this discussion, I highly doubt anyone has the appropriate hardware built-in to the wall or breaker box. All you can do is get a high-quality power strip or UPS.

Best way to protect vintage PC hardware: TVSS?

Gary…can you elaborate on Type 1 and Type 2 surge protectors? I had no idea there are 3 different types, and now I wonder which type I have been using. These devices to not have any labels indicating a type, or TVSS (or SDL). Some have UL certification numbers, but that’s all.

Best way to protect vintage PC hardware: TVSS?

I agree with you in that you cannot have an amperage surge without an increase in voltage. But learning more about TVSS and my conversations with APC and TrippLite has me very confused. What APC and TrippLite offer, which is reflective in their higher prices depending on the model, is higher...

Best way to protect vintage PC hardware: TVSS?

Recently I was working on my IBM PC Convertible when I heard a “pop” and smelled something burning. (I am drafting a separate post for troubleshooting that problem.) One possibility was a minor power surge, but the Convertible was plugged into a surge protector with built-in breaker that never...

Connecting vintage disk drives to modern computer

I do have an IBM Thinkpad external 3.5 drive that connects via USB. I can try to experiment with that, although if I am unable to browse the disk I will not know if the image was successful. Have you successfully written files to an external 5.25-inch disk, as well as 3.5-inch? Which Epson...

Connecting vintage disk drives to modern computer

Hello everyone. I am starting to learn more about how to connect vintage disk drives to a modern Windows laptop. My goal is to download any software I need onto my laptop and create bootable disk images for 3.5-inch, 5.25-inch, and 8-inch disks. 8-inch Disk Drive For 8-inch disks, it seems the...
