8 bit IDE (XTA) Replacement Project

This card can emulate a Hard Disk Drive on a IBM PS/2 with the XT-Bus installed such as the Model 30 or 25. Video shows the Boot sequence of this card, which is a milestone when developing this card and software. Further developing work has to be done for a full function card.

Because the image of a real 20 MB HDD has been copied and used for developing. That is the chicken / egg problem, you have to start with an existing image.

With the full function card the fdisk and format apps will be available to create the image w/o bad sectors.

This is such a cool project. I've been looking for something like this for a long time.

I have a very few plug and play PS2XT2SD cards included SD-Card for IBM PS/2 PS/1 to give away for 75 € plus shipping.

This card adapted a HDD and has the same function, any of the HDD type of the IBM BIOS can be chosen. Maximum is type 09 with 112 MB.

The image is stored in a file system on the SD-Card, data exchange has to be done with floppy or XT-IDE card.

I have ps/2 model 30 (8086 not 286) if it will work(ok if beta) i'm interested,
how can send you PM ? (i did not found replay via PM).

You can change the BIOS, I have done, the result:

2GB is possible, but some problems with MS-DOS, DR does make it, but not 100% tested.

And ist is getting much slower, since track files are much larger.

Nice work CallinElvis. I missed a few months of notifications on this thread somehow. I am glad you have made a solution.

Great work! I am really interested to buy one for my PS/1 2011. Unable to initiate DM due to message limit, but I will reply back.

Hello CallinElvis i'm interested in purchasing a PS2XT2SD card to test on my Schneider euro pc and euro pc 2. Getting an external plug to connect it to the same connector as the HD20 would go would be great.
Please message me as i can't send DM's . :(

I’ve received my PS2XT2SD and installed in my PS/1 2011 that came with a type 35 WDL-330P, which still works well.

Having made the configuration change to the PS2XT2SD to use the type 35 geometry, I continue to get a 1701 error at boot.

However, I can boot to rom and run fdisk from a PC-DOS 4.0 floppy. Fdisk strangely reports the media size as some 3800 MB, approximately the size of the SD card (!?).

If I create one huge partition, format fails with a divide by zero error. If I do not use the whole disk and create just a ~ 30MB partition, formatting is successful.

I can then copy content to the PS2XT2SD and it survives a reboot. However, if I copy too much, then a simple directory listing will result in corrupted text output. And, the 1701 error persists.

I suspect this must be me somehow misunderstanding the instructions for adjusting the disk type in the binary file on the SD card. I’m sure it’s something stupid on my part.

Let me know what you think, @CallinElvis
This is an awesome piece of hardware and will help resurrect so many old machines!

I can't wait to try one of these in my Tandy 1000 TL and RL/RLX series. Maybe also my 1100HD Laptop. :)

Has an XTA2SD device yet been tested in a Tandy 1000 RLX-B system? The behavior of the RLX-B differs slightly from the other XTA-bearing/capable Tandy 1000 systems, seemingly specific to the drive detection routine and subsequent EEPROM write activity at boot.

I got an Acculogic sIDE-1 on eBay. But it turns out it's just a rebadged Western Digital IDE-XT interface. It has the same "WD IDE SuperBIOS". Its drive table matches the parameters of WD's 20, 30, and 40 MB IDE-XT drives.
