He was fairly active on the forums until a few years ago. If you had not been reading the news lately the southern BC coast got swamped out and places like Vancouver have been physically cut off from the rest of the country all week as all the major highways are trashed. He's in Coalmont which is just down the river from Princeton and said river washed out most of the valley.
Heck, I know we have a few members from the Chilliwack Computer Club and while Chilliwack itself didn't get too wet it would be great to hear how everyone else is handling or if anyone is dealing with damage to their collections.

I talked to him on the phone about two months ago, not sure how much I should share. I hadn't talked to him in a few years and he called to check in on me and my family. He lost his wife two years ago (she was a really nice person, learning that upset me). He got a new truck in a insurance settlement (not regarding his wife), and was really happy about that as I think that was the first new vehicle he's ever owned. Had to cut the call short as I was at work when he phoned.

I sent him an email two or three days ago to see if he was safe, but he probably evacuated. Despite being a computer guy I don't think he has a smartphone. He says he spends most of his time on IRC now, honestly didn't know that people were still on it, I think I haven't touched IRC since the Windows 98se days.

Heh, vcfed has a channel on the Slashnet network that's fairly active. In fact, I'm at work and I'm in #vc right now! ;)
Alright well if you have heard from him recently and he manages to get into his email tell him we're hoping he's doing okay and there's people here offering to help if they can.

Good news, Ole just emailed me and he's fine. Ended up with a flooded basement but that was the extent of the damage. He had a few computers that were unplugged get wet but with a little TLC they should be fine. He said the water in the basement wasn't muddy, it was clear--so that should help him greatly. A lot of other people had it a lot worse: Ole's house (the old general store/hotel) is elevated a bit more than a lot of the town so he got about two feet of water in the basement but many others had their main floor filled up.

Talking to a few people in the towns affected (Coalmont, Princeton) figure that because of the damage, it might force the government's hand in improving some services that were damaged. The road going into Coalmont is an old miner's trail, so in parts it is single lane along a cliffside. Even if they had a few more places to pull over when there is oncoming traffic it would be better. Ole said he just got fibre internet yesterday so he's pretty happy about that. Can't get food but he can watch cooking videos... what a world LOL
