How would I determine if a serial cable is a null modem. M one end, F other end.

Check pin 2 on one side and see if it connects to pin 3 on the other side using a multimeter.

Have to work out how to access the female connecter wire?

You can use a tiny paperclip or jumper wire. Don't force anything larger in there or it might ruin the connector, just something enough to make a connection.

edit: I can see that daver2 already suggested this!

I always look around on my bench. Sure enough, a 1/4 resistor can be found. I poke the lead in and it works fine. I don't like using a paper clips as they have hard edges.

No poking of the wire needed. I connected through the Null Modem dongle (great word, dongle. Like flange.) and the serial cable. I had a db25 to 9 adapter with a female connector so I was able to connect the male end of the cable to the second pc. experimenting with interlink.

Got Interlink to work.
