HP elitebook 8460p motherboard failure

Hello everyone, I'm repairing this for a friend.

The motherboard is toast (from what I can see). Does anyone know what the failure point is on them? I believe it is the type with the "advanced" graphics chipset. Which is what I believe failed (chip heats up immediately upon powerup)

The specific board part number is 642754-001

Does anyone know if a different variant board will fit and work and maybe less failure prone than than this one? Maybe one with the standard chipset?

The laptop doesn't boot, black screen, and caps lock light flashes repetitively and doesn't stop.

Due to how OEMs are contracted to build laptops for companies like Dell and HP, intercompatibility isn't really designed in between models.

You can sometimes get lucky and find another motherboard from a laptop in the same series that is compatible, but nobody makes charts of this and it's more or less trial and error to find one.

As for the failure point, it could be the hot chip in question, or it could be the power regulation. Another thing you'll want to check is the CMOS battery, many laptops have suicide CMOS batteries that cause the laptop to fail to even power on if the battery is weak or dead. You'll also want to check the memory modules to see if they're bad.
 
Hello,

I found a donar HP 8460p that had a busted screen as a parts unit. The Motherboards both have the same part number. So I swapped them. Now the laptop boots up to an error 3F0 and says hard drive has no operating system... press f2... but the laptop becomes unresponsive.

Any ideas?
 
Download and burn one of these:
1. LiveCD of a Linux Distro and boot it. Does it boot?
2. LiveCD of Gparted and boot it. Does it boot?

Very odd problem... I cannot get the dvd rom drive to open. Pushing the button it does nothing..... though I can hear it seek when I initially turn the machine on.

note that the donar laptop, half the screen was visible, so I could see the machine booted and I could access bios and all that. But the hard drive was removed before I got it.

this machine I cannot access bios or anything. Like nothing is responding. No key presses or anything.

next step will be to install Linux onto a flash drive and hope the bios is enabled to boot off that, otherwise I’m at a loss.

ive even removed the hard drive and booted. Though it moves faster, I still end up at the same spot and nothing I do the computer responds to.

I opened it back up, all connections are good....

what should I do next?

Menu” message is displayed at the bottom of the screen.

● To select a menu or a menu item, use the tab key and the keyboard arrow keys and then
press enter, or use a pointing device to click the item.
● To scroll up and down, click the up arrow or the down arrow in the upper-right corner of the
screen, or use the up arrow key or the down arrow key.
● To close open dialog boxes and return to the main Computer Setup screen, press esc, and
then follow the on-screen instructions.

NOTE: You can use either a pointing device (TouchPad, pointing stick, or USB mouse) or the
keyboard to navigate and make selections in Computer Setup.

2. Press f10 to enter Computer Setup.

Thanks! I've tried. It seems as though the keyboard isn't plugged in someplace as its unresponsive to everything. I'll try plugging in a USB mouse when I get home tonight.

Hope I didn't fubar up the replacement motherboard.

Side note: I had a closer look at the dvd-rom drive and it appears something was spilled on it and has dried. Maybe that was the demise of the original motherboard, and the keyboard also got it.

How do I swap keyboards between these machines. Are they farther down than the motherboards? Or do they come out the top?

According to interweb pictures, the keyboard is held in by both screws and metal latches which are clipped into the upper body assembly, which is fairly common. The screws are going to be on the bottom of the laptop, and if you're lucky, HP labelled the screw holes with a keyboard icon. Remove the screws and carefully pry around the top edge of the keyboard with a thin spudger, guitar pick or paint scraper to release the latches from the plastic all along the top of the keyboard. It should eventually hinge up and away from the screen. Just be careful because it's very easy to damage the plastics.
 
Swapped keyboards. Now I can control the computer. I also swapped cd drives and the replacement will open and boot.

hard drive fails it’s test in bios.

I wonder what happened to this machine.... I’m ready to cut my losses, but now I see it as sort of a challenge.

what to do next? Live cd of Linux?
 
Ps there was dried liquid all over the bottom of the cd drive and the underside of the keyboard..... think there may be something my friends not telling me.....

Quick and & dirty; from the Microsoft site (free), download a W10 install routine using a USB drive. Boot from the USB drive just to see what's happening. If you get a successful boot then try to install the system to the HD. If that that fails you most probably have a bad HD. This would eliminate any CDROM problems in as much as booting is concerned also.

"I was just pouring coffee all over the keyboard, I don't understand why it stopped working"
