IBM 5155 help

Not entirely sure what you mean by jumpers or what they do but i know i have the JP in this picture (should be near top middle).
Yes, JP1 is a jumper block.

There are 4 positions, as described in the 'Board Configuration' section of [here]. 'Open' means that no jumper is fitted; 'closed' means that a jumper is fitted. The blue things are jumpers. So, your card, as expected, is configured for the defaults, which includes the card (card, not XUB) being configured for a base I/O port address of 300h. So, we can rule out a missing jumper on position 2 as the reason why your XT-CF-lite rev.2 card is not 'seeing' the CF card.

I removed the mouse card and i'm getting the same error, ...
Forget about the "Error 1h" for now. There is a problem happening before that: your XT-CF-lite rev.2 card is not 'seeing' the CF card. When that happens, the XUB will display the make-model of the CF card to the right of "Master at 300h:", as shown at [here]. We need to get that working.

Try a minimum configuration of only the following three cards:
- IBM Color/Graphics Monitor Adapter
- IBM 5.25" Diskette Drive Adapter
- Lo-tech XT-CF-lite rev.2

And note that slot #8 is special. Only certain cards can be fitted to it. See [here].

... could be that the cf card is modern but i figured it wouldn't be an issue since i have it formatted and partitioned
Do you have any other CF cards that you can try?
For the make-model of the CF card to get displayed by the XUB, the CF does not need to be partitioned/formatted.

I currently only have 1 CF card (which was purchased for this purpose). Removing the cards didn't change anything

Is that a 64GB CF card i see in post #19 ?. You should try a smaller CF card, 4GB or less, The recommended way is to set up, FDISK / FORMAT the CF card on the computer it is intended for, Using another computer can lead to problems.

it is a 64gb cf card, i'm willing to buy/try another cf card might just take a while for shipping. When it comes to formatting the cf card on the computer it's intended for i'm not sure how possible that is since i don't have a DOS floppy.

when buying a cf card do i have to look for anything specific? Don't want to buy another card that ends up not being recognized

I've had some experience with a handful of CF cards that were used for years with a Nikon DSLR, some cheapos that I bought on eBay, and some I bought new retail. Based on what I've seen so far, I am now sticking to name brand 2GB cards. I gather that older (and smaller) cards weren't really built for what we're trying to do with them. Newer and larger cards over 2GB in size are bigger than DOS can use fully without using multiple partitions. And that sometimes adds to the confusion. Even then, sometimes I get a dud. But the duds so far have still usually worked in the DSLR. They just won't cooperate as a DOS "boot disk".

Plus, if you get a dud 2GB card for $10 or so, you won't be quite as sad as getting a dud 64GB for four times that or more.

I have seen recommendations to look for cards that specify UDMA, but I've had duds that said they were and had others that didn't mention it work fine.

Note that for your current problem of XUB not 'seeing 'the CF card, the CF does not need to be partitioned/formatted. (At that point in time, the XUB is not reading any of the CF's contents.)

What Malc is writing of is something that can come into play later. For now, we just need to work out why the XUB is not 'seeing' the CF card. An incompatible CF card is a possibility. For example, the Lo-tech XT-CF-lite rev.2 is an example of an XT-IDE/XT-CF card that requires a CF card that can operate in 8-bit mode. Could it be that your 64GB CF can't do that !

ok, i got a new cf card and this one is recognized, but with every step forward there's another error, it gets stuck booting see. I read that it's a problem with the boot loader and to reformat the partition but i already did that prior and i did everything just like in this video--

Have you installed DOS onto the cf card yet? Without an operating system the disk won’t have anything to boot into. If it’s not that it’s probably the Master Boot Record not being set up.

It’s always so much simpler to do this on the target machine with a bootable DOS floppy but I know I have done the setup on a windows machine before. Dosbox might be able to handle the dos install but I don’t know about MBR operations. I think I used virtual box or another VM for that. If you can set up a DOS virtual machine and mount the CF drive as the hard disk then you can install DOS through a bootable DOS floppy image onto the CF card, and even run fdisk commands on it.

I recall there was a forum/blog post or video guide out there that explains the process well but I don’t have the ability to search for it effectively from mobile right now.

I would guess it's an MBR issue. How did you install DOS? The video seems to use a floppy disk to install it, but you said you don't have one, so I wonder how you followed that tutorial.

You're right, i don't own a dos floppy, well not a physical floppy. I used virtualbox with raw passthrough to emulate a computer with a dos floppy. At this point all i've been doing is repeating the process hoping something will change

Whereabouts on the planet are you located?
Someone here may post to you a DOS boot floppy (with extras such as FDISK.COM and FORMAT.COM)
I do that freely here for people in Australia.
Based near Seattle

I live in Seattle. I could mail you a 360K 5.25" DOS floppy with the necessary items. (Unless you have a 3.5" Drive in the machine? The drives weren't visible in your photos. ) There's always the possibility your floppy drive is bad - but they usually aren't.
Feel free to PM me if you are interested in that.

i am, idk why but getting dos to work on this hard disk is pretty much impossible for me

i got the cf card to boot dos on virtualbox, it just wont let me boot it on the computer itself, i have no clue what's up with it
