I've been given this poor old PC05, clearly meant for parts only... But I had some boards, and found one on Ebay.
I already had a controller board and the cables. So I cleaned it and checked for the missing parts.

So I'm missing the optical sensor, the 4x M040 and 3x M044 boards. Does anyone had some spares available?
No problem if they are defective, but missing somewhat complicating. The alternative is that I clone the boards and sensor...
But I prefer original parts :)

How did you clean up the aluminum surfaces? They look great; actually it looks like you did a remarkable job of clean-up. What's your secret(s)?

I've never seen a photo of the optical sensor; thanks for sharing that. Where'd you find it?

THX. I missed the PC04 repair thread when the (old) forum was mishandling my account and I was unable to get the problem corrected. Fortunately the shift to the new forum resolved matters and I'm now able to more regularly engage.

Roland,

I have a PC05 (with the 12 slot back plane) that I got with my 8/E. It came with ah PC8E controller but I have never been able to get either the reader or the punch to work.

I have the following PC05 spares (from ebay so I have idea if they work or not):

1 G918 Photo Amplifier
5 M040 High Current Driver
2 M044 4 Solenoid Driver
1 M715 Reader Clock
1 M710 Punch Control

This is in addition to the boards in the PC05.

I am happy to lend these to you for your debugging. I can also send you the boards in my PC05 and once you get your PC05 working you can test my boards.

Mike

Hi Mike, I've never heard about a PC05 on a PDP8? Does it also use the M840 controller? I always thought that the PC04 is for the PDP8 and PC05 is for the PDP11. Would be nice if I can use the PC05 also on a PDP8 because I have a spare M840 controller board. But I didn't dive into the differences. The only difference I know is the automatic motor start in the PC05 puncher.

Thanks for the offer to borrow boards, but sending your boards for lending to the Netherlands might even cost custom charges... So I prefer to make it complete with my own boards. Can't be hard to fix them, the only problem is to find the boards. So it would be nice if someone has a few boards for sale.

Regards, Roland

Yes it did come with an M840 board. I have not been able to make it work so I don't know if the seller lied to me or what? It looks like the M840 was modified. I will send a pic when I get a chance. When I try to punch I just get the feed hole punched. I have been unable to get the reader to start.

I had forgotten that you were in the Netherlands. If you are ever in the Chicago area I have a spare bedroom with your name on it.

Hi Mike, check for some differences and board usage https://gunkies.org/wiki/PC04/PC05_High-Speed_Paper-Tape_Reader/Punch
I don't know if your PC05 is modified, maybe others on the forum know a bit more about the possibilities for a PC05 on a PDP8. Note that even the cables are different. I didn't know that either...

Here on the left I have the PC04 on a M840 controller in the PDP8/E. On the right I have the PC05 on a M7810 controller in de PDP11/20. The PC05 seems to have a bit more 'intelligence' on board...

I had two racks like the one on the left but I had to sell them when we moved and the ex-wife said we didn't have room for them and her desk. I should have sold the wife and kept the pdp-8's😎
