Tektronix 4051, any preventive maintenance/repairs to keep in mind

A while back I got my hands on a Tek 4051 in pretty decent cosmetic shape. It came with ROM expander and a few roms.
Of course, it didn't work :)

After some debugging, the following issues where found and fixed:
One transformer tap was not connected. This turned out to be the wire on top of the transformer going to the solder tap, so this was a mostly easy fix.
The on/off switched had died.
A 47 ohm resistor, R339, on the display board was burned out. I measured all parts after this and did not see anything obviously wrong so replaced the resistor.

After that I got image, some calibrating later and some cleaning later, I now have a working Tek 4051 :)
Some keyboard switches are a little crusty, but apart from that it all appears to be working as expected.

Now I was wondering, is there anything to check or keep in mind on these devices, common errors for example, or specific parts that often fail and can be wise to replace before they do?
I did find this service note, describing the issue with R339/R64/Q165 and I ordered parts to perform the recommended modification: https://github.com/mmcgraw74/Tektro..._ServiceNotes/4051 4052 Display board mod.pdf

And what would be a good way to get files/data on this machine? Sadly I don't have the communications pack, so no serial port to work with. I did find the gpib flash drive and plan to build one of those at least!

Regards,

Rik

Congratulations on your 4051 repair!

There is no preventive maintenance other than changing the filter on the fan in the back. I just cut a piece of home air cleaner filter to fit. Remove the fan cover screws. The filter is attached to the fan by those screws.

Looks like you have three ROM Packs in the ROM Expander. I guess one of them is the 4051R06 Editor? What are the other two ROM Packs?

I imagine you have found my github repository for 4050 BASIC Programs: https://github.com/mmcgraw74/Tektronix-4051-4052-4054-Program-Files ?

Without a serial port or Flash Drive - you can type a program in on your keyboard.

Here is a small zip file from the original Tek405x Emulator programs directory with some of the smallest 4050 programs.

Thanks for the zip, I did just type programs over so far for testing but a few small ones are nice to try!
If I make a GBIP flash drive, is there any reason to seek out a communications pack (or clone it) apart from 4014 emulation?

And I got the editor indeed, also the binary loader (4051R05) and file manager ROM ( 020-0279-00 ). Sadly not the 4907 floppy drive.
I have designed a simple ROM pack and will order this soon so I can make other roms myself.
I did see that the Tektronix museum used to sell a ROM pack with several ROMs in one, the MaxiROM, but that seems to be sold out.
As I have the ROM expander, I don't mind making a "simple" ROM card that just contains a single ROM.

Good to know there is no other preventive maintenance to do!

A small update on this 4051. I finally got the parts in to make the GBIP flash drive. I also got the parts and PCBs for the ROM card I made.
The ROM card has a few small addressing quirks, but by shifting the 2K ROMs around a little bit, it works! It just holds a single 8K ROM but it does mean I now have a 4051R12 fast graphics ROM :)
So with those two build, I can successfully play some games and run some code on this machine!

I did see that the MAXIROM is for sale again, but I got enough PCBs (and the rom expander box) so I think I'll use this approach.

Nice 4051 ROM board with 4051R12 ROM. No picture of your Flash Drive build?

Now you can enjoy your 4051!

I'm working on a Battlestar Galactica DEMO #2 for my 4054A exhibit at VCF SW 2026 - my fourth year exhibiting at VCF SW!
My first VCF exhibit was at VCF West 2022 - which was the closest VCF show at that time.

Hopefully you plan to exhibit your 4051!

Thanks! And I haven't taken a photo of that sadly, it's now stuck in the 4051. It took some force to plug it in and I think I will just leave it in for now...

And I do plan to if there is some vintage meetup locally!
