Vcfed.org painfully slow - denial of service attack?

The vcfed.org website has become painfully slow. Occasionally the web browser even times out waiting for a page.
There are just a few active users, but about 1500 "guests".
Is this some form of denial of service attack and can it be stopped?
What are these 1500 "guests" doing?
Could the admins please look into this?
