PX-8 - You Just Won't Believe This!!!

No I didn't. Don't really want to register there just to post one message  Google seems to find "Erik's place" very well already.

I never got any answer back about any ram disks available. Likely my fault as I asked if you have one, what's the price. I suppose if "you" don't have one, then a response is not required ?? I am HAPPY with the stuff I did get, new PX-8, with working nicads and power supply, and extra software on ROMS. I never did figure out if he is pulling the owner's manual out of the boxes and selling them separately. Not that important to me, as all that info is available on the web anyway, and we "have" Curtis and Terry tooooo.

As far as cables, just buy a miniDin8 straight thru cable and cut it in half (Mac printer cable is perfect). Find a female DB9 lying around and voila. I live in the boonies so still waiting for my cable to show via UPS.

Man, you guys suck!

I just got off the phone with them to place my order for the PX-8 - you all forced me into it, at least that's what I'm gonna tell the wife!

Apparently, I got the last RamDisk? He said it wasn't brand-new, so he tossed it in for $10

Also ordered the manual, and the software. Like $120 shipped, which i think is a steal. I remember these things being hyped up, again, in Creative Computing in the 80's.

Terry - I'll be hitting YOU up for info. I've never played with one of these before. I've seen TONS of HX-20's, as the older cruise ships use them for making the hard-plastic room keys. The small plastic ones with the holes.

Guess the people he has doing email processing don't do a very good job. Makes me mad that they never gave me any kind of response on the ram disk. Proves once again that calling on the phone is better, I suppose. Although, I have received prompt email responses from other vendors :x Likely you will have to rebuild the nicad on the ram disk unit, they end up going all the way down to zero when not used.

Well, he said it wasn't knew, and he wasn't going to test it, but he'd throwit in for $10, so I don;t even kow if it works.

As for the batteries, I'l probably just rebuild all the packs with some super hi-cap NiMH cells I have from my RC cars. I know I have a few 2500-3300mah cells lying around, probably a couple dozen.

Talk about your runtime! I may just have to rig up a charge solution, as it'll take a LOOOOOOONG time to charge these things at 150-200ma,plus it needs to be a NiMH-aware charger. Different delta and peak levels for charging.

Can't wait to get my hands on the stuff - haven;t told the wife yet.
She's gonna love it.

Di you see what they're charging for HX-20's???

Tony

No, no, no, I'm not going to look or ask about the HX-20.... I escaped with my life when the PX-8 showed up, not going to press my luck. Only thing that I really don't like about the PX-8 is reading those old style LCD. I keep adjusting the view angle, etc. Have to hold it at just the right angle to read the screen well. Yes, I keep moving the LCD tilt thing all the time too. Spoiled by back lit stuff these days.

PX-8s Ah.... Now I remember

PX-8s Ah.... Now I remember

We used to sell these PX-8s when they were the latest thing in mobile computing. They followed on from the HX-20 machine.

I believe that the microcassettes were non-standard (I'm not sure there was a standard at the time, there were several dictation machine variations in tapes).

The PX-8 runs a version of CP/M specially adapted for the Tape drive rather than diskette. It's seriously wierd.

Epson followed up with a totally brilliant machine the QX-10 which ran CP/M 2 and 3.

Epson also had PC-Compatible machines but they weren't very compatible with IBM-PC actually, they had strange anomalities. They were the most unreliable machines we ever sold. The hard disks were the best; sometimes they managed to park the heads and wouldn't power up properly, you had to pick up the base unit and shake it from side to side to move the heads and then the hard disk would power up!

Anyway, good luck with the PX......

Hehehe.

I use my TRS-80 Model 100 quite a bit, so I'm kind of used to the wierd old-fashioned LCD displays. This one is quite a bit better than the one in the Model 100, IMHO.

That is some serious overkill. The AA NiCads I bought for $2.50 at Harbor Freight work just fine, and last forever. If ya want to replace the internal battery, I just bought a 4x AAA adaptor from RatShack, and soldered it in place of the old battery. Fits nicely inside the case, and makes it a lot easier to change the cells, if I should live long enough to wear out another set.

Not really overkill - I already BOUGHTthem, so they're going to end up with "cell-rot" if I don;t do something with them!

I no longer run electrics, so they're just laying around. I have about 12-18 of those, plus about another dozen 2200mah AA batteries as well.

Now, overkill would be slappin one of my 2500-3500mah LiPo's in there.

Yo, Terry, didn't I see you mention upgrading the RAMdisk memory earlier in another thread, or maybe here?
Got a link for me, either her eon VC or elsewhere? Sounds interesting - With my luck, I'll probably end up with the lamest one!

PX-8 Cables

PX-8 Cables

Oh, one more thing....

Who's going to step up to the plate and make the required serial cables for these recent PX-8 purchases? For $$ of course...

I, myself, will be quite happy to never solder up a serial/centronics cable again in my life! During my stint doing PC-MOS/386 and SCO Unix/Xenix installs in the early 90's, I soldered more serial cables than I care to remember.

Whoever's gonna make 'em, sign me up.

Edit: ok, I'm better now. Star Tech's email customer support is bad, nuff said.
