Hi at all,i'm a new entry and i'm italian,excuse-me for not very good speaking.
I have a ibm 286 ps1 model 2011,this pc is rom-based,have a dos 4.0 ibm on the motherboard,in rom.
I search info to change the operating system on this machine,i like freedos to install on it to make free this pc.
Second options: I like if dos 4.0 running from rom,but i need to format the hard drive and put in only my free programs.
I'm not have the original disk of dos 4.0 ibm.
I have read that to enter in a bios by press the 2 button of the mouse at the system startup, but i'm not have an original ibm mouse and i cannot enter in a bios.
This problems is present also in a 386 ps1,because have the some rom with dos 4.0
I have formatted a ibm ps2,is very simple,no problems,i have installed freedos on it without difficulty.
Ps1 is more complex, but i like this pc and i need your help.
Have a lot of fun and thanks for the help from Italy :)

From the little I know of the PS1 (rom models) I don't think there is much you can do to change the machine.

Maybe someone else here knows where to get a PC-DOS 4.01 disk at, I looked and can not find any free stuff. You need the programs on that disk to properly use the hard disk.

I moved the thread to the 'PCs and Clones' area, which is more appropriate.

The IBM mouse I believe is just a standard PS/2 mouse.

Let's not speculate on what can't be done with the machine, and wait for somebody who actually has one and can tell you what can be done.

Hi,thanks for your help.
Yes,the ps1 is very particular computer.
Ps2 computer is a standard computer,is a best choice.
Unfortunately, cannot find easy old pc in my town,my collection is only a pentium 166 mhz,i have installed damn small linux on it.
i have read this information on internet about ps1,but is very complex, you can read this for me? this tips permit only upgrade at newest versions of pc-dos?

--> The PS/1 is a ROM based machine. It normally boots from its
"Built-In-DOS" on the ROM D: drive and reads config.sys and Autoexec.bat
from there as well. The PS/1 can be reconfigured, using"CUSTOMIZE",
to read Config.sys and Autoexec.bat from C: so that the Stacker devices
may be loaded. If the boot process is not "CUSTOMIZed" before loading
Stacker, the data may appear to be "missing" because the STACKER.COM device
has not been loaded.

A 4 Quadrant system menu is normally loaded from ROM upon boot. It consists
of 1.Information 2.Microsoft works 3. Your software and 4. IBM DOS. You can
shell to a DOS prompt by pressing <shift F9>. It is installed in Config.sys:
"INSTALL=D:\SHELLSTB.COM".

"CUSTOMIZE How System Starts" is a program normally in the C:\DOS directory,
but is copied into the Stacker drive upon "STACKING... the existing drive".
The program also should be on the DOS diskettes that came with the
machine. In the Customize program you can configure the computer to
Read the system files, Config.sys, and Autoexec.bat from C: or D:
Note: THE CUSTOMIZE DEFAULTS CAN BE RESTORED BY POWERING DOWN THE
SYSTEM, HOLDING DOWN THE 2 MOUSE BUTTONS, AND POWERING BACK UP.

RECOVERY:
Note: You MUST have the DOS program diskette containing CUSTOMIZ.EXE
or a bootable floppy to proceed. Nothing can be done until you have
one of these!

If you have the DOS program diskette:
1. Insert the DOS diskette in A: and Run the CUSTOMIZE program from the
Dos Quadrant. (You can also <shift> F9 to get to a prompt and run
A:Customiz.)

If you do not have the DOS diskette but have a bootable system
diskette:
1. Insert the system diskette in A: and from the system menu press
Alt+SysRq to force the system to boot from A: (the D: Rom drive
will not be accessible after this.)
2. Copy config.sys to A: and reboot
3. From the DOS directory on the Stacker drive (C:) run CUSTOMIZ.

Running CUSTOMIZE:
1. The third line from the bottom of the screen says "Read
Config.sys:". Click on "from Disk"
2. The next line down says " Read Autoexec.bat". Click on "From Disk"
3. The last line says "Disk to Read from". Click on C:
4. Press <ENTER> to save changes and exit.
5. Reboot the machine.
6. This will bring you to a C: prompt. Edit the Config.sys on C:\ and
add the line:
Install=D:\SHELLSTB.COM to restore the system Quadrant menu.
7. Restart the system for changes to take affect.

My good friend in Italy ... I work for IBM and I have secret sources of information. I have all of the PS/1 Model 2011 configuration files and programs. It includes the Customize program you mention.

I've not used a PS/1 2011 so I can't help you with specifics, but this will get you much closer.

Indeed! Much more can be done with the 2011 than even I believed.

Talk about finding a gold mine of info!

One small clarification - when I said PS/2 mouse, I did not mean that you had to steal a PS/2 and get the mouse. :) Any PS/2 style mouse should plug in. The PS/1 series came out after the PS/2 series, and probably uses the same type of mouse.

Yes, I have installed later versions of DOS on a '286-based PS/1, but without a mouse to access the Setup, there's not much you can do (I don't recall if there's a hotkey). Bootdisk images can be downloaded from several easy-to-find websites, (Hint: Try googling 'DOS bootdisk' or similar).

thanks

thanks

Thanks for your help.
I have download this file,is free?
The program called customiz.exe, permit booting from rom or from floppy, cannot boot from hard disk,as standard computer like ps2.
If i booting from freedos floppy,i format easy the hard drive, but,if i install freedos, successively cannot boot from hard drive....
I dont like the hard disk full of original programs,i like if permit to format it,successively boot from rom and use hard disk to put in only my favourite dos programs.

The files are for use with your machine, so do not worry about copying them. They used to be hosted on the IBM PC Company BBS.

I have not used such a machine - I will try to find some documentation on getting it to boot from the hard disk with a newer version of DOS.

hi

hi

hi mbbrutman, thanks for help for this machine.
at the moment i cannot find a ps2 or another old pc at the used product market of my city.
is present only a few pentium1.
how to find old pc in your country?

Don't look for the PS/2 .. just get a PS/2 style mouse. Those should be readily available anywhere.

Note: THE CUSTOMIZE DEFAULTS CAN BE RESTORED BY POWERING DOWN THE SYSTEM, HOLDING DOWN THE 2 MOUSE BUTTONS, AND POWERING BACK UP.
So, supposedly any PS/2 compatible mouse where you push both mouse buttons upon start-up should work. It reminds me about the Amiga Early Startup Control available on AmigaOS 2+ computers.

i like old pc

i like old pc

i like old pc but i'm not have a collection at the moment because i'm not find old pc in my town! i have only this ps1.
i search a ps2,possibly model 30 286.
i search also a 386 or 486 model.
my objective is save old pc from destruction, make free it with freedos and put in my house,on the table.

Italy, I have a friend who considered dumping two of his worn PS/2 systems. I don't know if he has gotten to it, and shipping would be a killer (probably thrice what you'd pay for any IBM PS/2 you can find in Italy), but if you want, I could ask.

thanks for your interest

thanks for your interest

thanks for your interest,
is just if i search a ps2 in italy,because a shipping is a problem,requires money.
i have write an email at retrocomputing vendors site in italy to ship a ps2 at 5 euro's.
this is the website http://www.cbmitapages.it/
the question of ps1 is very complex...customiz.exe cannot permit boot from hard drive.
the ps1 286 used a special monitor which had the computer's power supply built into it.
it occupies a lot of space.
ps2 pc's working with my lcd monitor?

customiz.exe

customiz.exe

i have suppose that customiz.exe is a generic boot loader to install in hard disk.
the file configur.exe modify the bios setup.
i dont like a 4 quad screen,i like a standard msdos black screen at bootup.
my ps1 have a floppy drive due to hangs,at the moment i cannot use it...
i search an old esdi floppy drive. is possible to use an actual ide drive on a 286 pc?
the 386 pc system and higher use a ide hard disk and floppy drive. ;)

customiz.exe

customiz.exe

i have open customiz.exe in my debian pc,in a dos box emulator.
this is a screenshot.
why do not permit boot from hard disk? only diskette or rom...
