Cottonwood BBS is back online and operational!

After much trial and error, I've got all the right pieces put together... So dust off your old modem, and give Cottonwood BBS a call. It's presently the only known Commodore dial-up BBS in existence!

I apologize to anyone who tried to call before... The VoIP line I tried to use didn't work out... So I'm back with a new number, a regular phone line, and NO line noise!

Call now at +1 (951)242-3593

For detailed information on the BBS, and tips on connecting, check out the Cottonwood BBS informational website:

Mike, I saw your application, and you're now a fully validated user. Your user # is 6. I would normally call the number in the application to let you know you were validated, but since you provided me with a ficticious phone number, I figured posting here would be the next best thing. ;-)

Feel free to call as often as you like. The BBS is really still in it's infancy. I'm trying to aquire more disk space, but since Commodore hardware isn't manufactured anymore, I've got to get everything second-hand... Which can be sort of hit and miss, as far as what's really useable and what's not. Beside that, the larger storage devices are very hard to find. 5.25" single-sided disk drives are the easiest to find, and I'm currently running the BBS on four of those. The software I'm using will support up to four more devices. Hopefully I'll eventually be able to find some 3.5" disk drives, or at least some 5.25" double-sided drives to fill those slots.

But... The BBS is up and fully operational, and it will remain so for a long time to come! :)

I attempted to set up the BBS using hard drive partitions from a PC through 64HDD... But the BBS software didn't like it. I tried it with both Color 64 and Ivory. I then tried using 64HDD to run several "simulated" 1581's. Color 64 didn't like this... Ivory seemed to run fine, until someone tried to download a file and didn't type in the filename correctly. Normally, this would get a FILE NOT FOUND error on the C64, and the message OPERATION ABORTED would be displayed on the BBS. However, on these "simulated" drives, the error must be a bit different, because instead of issuing an OPERATION ABORTED message and returning to the command prompt, the C64 and the BBS just froze! This was clearly not accepatble, so I'm back to running on "pure" Commodore equipment, which I actually prefer anyway. Kind of makes it more authentic... ;-)
