Internet Explorer 5.5 for 16-bit (486)

Kind of on the edge of being "on-topic" I know, I hate these borderline questions so please bear with me

I am looking for Internet Explorer 5.5 that will work on Windows 3.11 on a 486. I know it is around as I downloaded it somewhere and installed it about 6 months ago! The hard drive then broke, and I realised that I no longer have the installation file.

I can find 5.0, but I would really like 5.5 again

I also believe 5.5 is the most advanced version of IE to work in 3.11?

Can anyone help?

Its goes as far as 5.0.1 at the Evolt browser archive, you might poke around it for something else though.

Edit: looks like the evolt stuff is much better, oh well.

This is the site my friends and I used to go to get the better (16-bit) versions of WinAmp and a few other programs that bogged down after a while.

They have IE5.5 here http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=msie however like the previous poster I'm not sure there was really a "16-bit" version. I do think 5.5 ran on 98se however I think once 6.0 came out they stopped supporting anything under Windows 2000.

I KNOW there is an IE 5.5 that works in Windows 3.11... because I used it for nearly a year!

Unfortunately the hard drive locked up and died, hence I can't recover any data from it

Maybe there exists some 32-bit extender (at least for WfW 3.11) that allows you to run Windows 95 (W32) applications like MSIE 5.5?

I recommend avoiding W32s. It can cause errors in programs (I saw it only would rotate a sky map in 180 degrees twice, not the full 360 degrees) without them being evident. I do have an IE 5.5 CD I made, but unfortunately didn't look at the contents last night (also something I remember was an incompatibility - something like not running 5.5 under NT).

What Microsoft does in it's updates is detect which operating system you are on, it downloads the downloader or package with an .inf that only points to the valid OS files it downloaded with that package.

When we were rolling out IE5.5 we had to have several copies in order to install it on NT, 2000, one or two 98 systems so I got tired of that and hacked together a copy of IE5.5 for all the OS's it mentioned in the .inf (although I certainly don't remember 3.x being in there) but that did create a "universal" copy for all our NT and above systems. Unfortunatly you'd have to download the seperate packages (meaning they'd still need to be hosting them) in order to do something like this. I have no idea if any of the previous links have that version or not but you could check using that technique I guess.

evildragon has the right point. Did you have win32s installed or something to run newer (32-bit/PE executables) on 3.x?

I don't think I had anything special on the system. Just downloaded the EXE file, ran and it installed...
