Apple II GS: Mouse not working.

I'm using System 6.01 which I got from another member. I have two 3.5 drives and the 5.25 drive that the system came with. The mouse I bought (ADB) doesn't work for some reason. I can't be sure if the keyboard's plug on the left side is broken or else it is the mouse. (The keyboard has a plug on the right with a male-to-male cable which attaches it to the back of the unit. So I have my mouse hooked up to the left plug on the keyboard.)

Is it possible to select/ scroll through menu items using the keyboard?

If I understand what you are saying. You should be able to switch sides so the cables are now on the other sides of the keyboard. That would tell you if you have a bad side on the keyboard or if the mouse is bad. If it is the keyboard then you may have to resoder it. Common problem. If it is the mouse, then wire in the mouse is bad. Replacing the ADB mouse, is no problem. I have them The rectangle ones or the newer oval ones. As well as other items.

It seems that the left side of the keyboard has a broken plug. I have to open it up, right?

Well since I'm not good at sodering and a quick look inside didn't seem to reveal any problems... *sighs* I'm not exactly swimming in money at the moment. Pouring money into this computer seems like a bad idea for some reason. I knew the keyboard was broken when I got it because the Spacebar is leaning a little over to the left. Plus the case had a larger crack in it than I anticipated probably because of it been moved around a bit in shipping. And I'm still reeling over the idea that the thing hasn't got a hard drive.

Don't get me wrong, I like having a piece of history sitting on the table next to my computer desk, but I'd like it to work much better than it is... seems a waste to put it in a box and forget about it... Ah well, next month I oughta buy a "new" mouse and keyboard.

I've learned my lesson: no more buying from Ebay for vintage stuff.

If it is the IIgs keyboard iit is easy to open. Sounds like it was packaged bad. 4th one I have heard this month. Anyways, if the conector connection is bad. EASY fix. Open case and look at it with a magniding glass. You should see one of the leggs of the connector is broken loose from the solder. Just add a little solder to the tip of the pencil for each of the leggs.

The keyboard was in the bottom of the box. The monitor had the screen facing down. The unit itself was in the "front" of the box. Everything was plastic wrapped up pretty good. It all arrived in one box. There was also some kinda orange paperish wrappings inside the box. Looks sorta like paper but it has a little spongy feel to it.

When I bought it, the seller indicated the crack on the top of the CPU unit's case with a picture but didn't identify the fact that the keyboard was broken. And as an additional annoyance, the monitor is composite-color rather than "full color." The IIe games packaged with the machine were okay... one of them was a text-based Star Wars thingie that I'm sure wasn't made officially. As for the case, I opened that up and put some packing tape on the inside and the outside to "fix" the crack somewhat. I might just get some super glue... but got lazy.

I haven't got a sodering iron as it is. I have a clutzy friend who's got one, but I wouldn't trust him with anything. :D

I don't mind swapping disks around. Just wish I had a Mac already so I could archive disks.
