Ok, here I am (again) looking for a computer bit (no, the other kind) that some of you might have in your "why the hell am I keeping this?" box. Mine doesn't contain one.

I have a perfectly well working (now) Samsung SD500 286 motherboard and, it would be great to be able to test it out, but, it has no keyboard connector.

Ok, technically, it DOES, but, nothing you could plug a keyboard into.

As you can see from the attached picture, the on-board connector is a 5-pin right angle connector that a cable hooked up to and then a standard 5 pin female AT keyboard connector would be mounted to an opening in the case.

Some Brainiac's idea of a smart design move, no doubt.

Anyway, if you have a spare one of these little buggers, I'd be interested in acquiring it.

TIA

You know, I think I just might have one of those babies (but no promises); let me have a look.

I might even be in Hamilton next week, but be warned: if I do have one,
considering what you're asking for some of your boxes, it'll cost ya
a *very large* coffee!

Well, T's sending me one, but, if you have one as well, and you're going to be in town, I'd be happy to trade you a VERY large coffee for it because, sure as hell, if the one he has works, and I sell it with the board, I'll get another board that has the same type of connector and I'll be trying to scrounge up another one.

As for my prices, well, compared to what some places are asking for the same stuff, they're a bargain :) Try ABC Resellers.

If you're ever in Kitchener, I've got a non-working 286 motherboard that I recently found and was going to pitch. It has a keyboard connector that can be salvaged. We're only a few mins off the 401 (and there's a couple Timmy's en route ;) ).

Joel. Thanks kindly, and, I would LOVE to be able to nip over to Kitchener and pick up the board and connector, but, due to a small psychological quirk, I am no longer able to travel outside of Hamilton (or to some parts of Hamilton) so, I'm afraid I'm going to have to pass on your kind offer.

And, with the vitrified radioactive waste repository he's currently building, he won't even have to power up the decorations to have them glow in the dark.

Good thing you weren't planning on having any more kids there, T. LMAO

Glad to see you've got one on the way.
Managed to find an S550 which is probably the same, but I also have
some of those cables somewhere; if I run across them I'll kep ya in
mind.

Might come & see ya anyway some time when I'm in your town; since ya
don't need the cable I guess we'd go dutch on the coffees.

Just kiddin' ya abt the prices ;-) More power to ya!

BTW, you've probably got it backwards: it's not your psychological
quirk that's keepin' ya in Hamilton, it's living in Hamilton that
causes the quirk; living in Toronto actually causes full-fledged
insanity...

Yes, if you find it, do keep me in mind as the one that T is sending sounds overly complicated for the job at hand, but, perhaps the passive components are necessary. I suppose I'll find out :)

That cable gizmo was pulled from a Columbia VP (luggable), which has no shielding around the internal power supply, which is located about 6" from the keyboard connector, so the extra do-dads on it are prob'ly there to prevent some of the stray nasties bouncing around inside the case from triggering a false keystroke. The complexity can be easily reduced in a minute or two by creative application of a pair of nippers.

Passive components???

It's just a short 4c cable, abt 4" with a 5 pin header going to a chassis
mount DIN-5, no?

Yeah, that's what it looks like to me, I know the one in my Datatrain DPC1000 is just a motherboard connector to cable to XT keyboard connector, but, being an XT, it has a different motherboard connector and a 6 connector cable, so, obviously, I couldn't use that one.

Like T said, his is coming out of a unit where the P/S was damn close to the cable connector, so, the components are probably just to bleed off RFI radiation.

Guess I'll find out when I get it. :)

Wow, haven't got it yet? I mailed it a week ago. So much for the new improved (expensive) international mail service...

Nope, still hasn't arrived, however, Monday was Thanksgiving up here, so, that, undoubtably slowed it down. Maybe tomorrow.

Probably would have been faster if we just both had walked to the border and pitched it across to me LOL

It wouldn't be bad if you got better service for more money, but, like up here, I'm paying more and getting slower service with Canada Post.

Wonder how they rationalize that?

I hate to think how long it's going to take the package I'm expecting from California to get here. Any bets? It was supposed to have mailed today.

I'd even settle for them treating the packages nicely for the extra loot.

When I was a kid, we used to get mail delivery 3 times a day because it went between major centers by train, so, I could get a letter from several hundred miles away (hey, we even had Saturday delivery then) the next day.

Now it takes 5 days to get an invitation from across the street. There's progress for you......

Yeah, that might be it. Perhaps they thought it was the separation triggering mechanism from a MIRV. No doubt, they are very similar looking.

BTW, didn't show up today either.

No, wait until someone mentions Al Gore running for president in 2008 and then snap it over there.

Gore? The academy award guy?? For President??? (Only in America).

BTW, if Godwin's Law applies to Nazis, why shouldn't there be a similar law for flaming bleedinghearts? I hereby invoke Yag's new law. AlGore is a closed thread!
