I have these two phones, both Motorola, one a Piper old flip style and the other is the classic brick style. I think I mentioned these before, not sure. If anyone runs across chargers for these and they're cheap, I'll reimburse you+shipping, quick-like. The brick is like the classic-II, not the thick brick one. The Piper is like this one:

Just if you run across one, I've been looking (got an idea of one thrift store local) but so far not much luck.

You mean these are still useful somewhere?

I think the chargers are different for Li-Ion, NiCds & NiMh batteries.
PM me & I'll see what I've got that'll work for ya. Should also have car adapters & hands-free kit somewhere...

February 18, 2008 the FCC will no longer require cellular service licensees to province analog service. With CDMA, 3G and EDGE I doubt they'll keep analog much past that date.

MikeS, Yep, they still work. Two out of three wanted to connect to Verizon. The third has no power. But the third, the piper, has something that looks like a data port, and I'd like to see if I can dig up that cable. Looks like a serial port, has eight contacts. We'll see. If you do have something, that would be great. I think they're cradle deals. The Omega brick actually has a barrel connector with an odd size.

afaik, the law is still requiring these phones to be working for 911 calls. I have old info, though, that may have changed.

I talked to the motorola dealer here in town, and they told me that every chip they've made in phones and radios can be reprogrammed for a lot of things (different frequencies, Beaumont Army Hospital has its own internal cel service-- that was freaky when I tried to call out). It would be neat if I could take these things down and have cellular radios made out of them.

I still have that Tandy dual-band brick, too, the jewel of these phones. Got a real pleather case, too, has Tandy stamped right on it!

So only one is actually a Motorola? AFAIK the port is power, spkr & mike and is also used for programming.

Cellular companies who own an A or B license (such as Verizon and Alltel) must still provide analog service until February 18, 2008. After that point, however, most cellular companies will be eager to shut down AMPS and use the remaining channels for digital services.

AMPS is the analog Cellphone system. So if AMPS is going off line in '08 to make more room for the digital system I doubt 911 is going to work.

Seems like most all analog systems are being shutdown. Cell and TV being the 2 biggest. Most of the PSTN is digital now adays unless its an unusually old section.

Er, no, two are motorola, one is a Omega brick and another is the piper flip, the third is the Tandy. The Tandy and the brick turned on once, and wanted to connect. The piper never turned on. I'm gonna swing by and see if the motorola people can tell me anything more. me *might* laugh.

I went to that thrift shop and found a cradle charger for the piper flip phone. Three of my batteries work for a little while, and four of them didn't charge. S'okay. When I dialed out it transfers me to an outside operator cause "the phone I am using is not registered in my area" and gives me the option of making either collect or charge card calls "for as low as $0.25 per minute." And I assume it still can access 911 calls, but I'm not gonna test that one. Very staticy, too. I think the contacts for the slide antenna are dirty, when you wiggle it there's more static. So I have one serviceable phone.

My wife told me it's also a great security device, cause if anyone was to attack me I could chuck it at them and the weight of it would take 'em out. :p
