Goldstar XT-4 - How to dump software to PC?

Yes, folks I have a Goldstar XT-4 which is a IBM clone. I have been writing a review about the machine and have been describing many things about the hardware and other features. I will post about this, once I have the review done.

One last thing remains, I would like to know how to dump the software into my PC.

I have one 5 3/4 floppy drive. A serial and a parallel port on the back of the machine. I have a 32MB drive.

Any ideas and suggestions would be welcome. I am not a programmer, nor can I design any hardware to accomodate this task, so I would like simple solutions if possible.

Your best bet would be laplink, I would imagine, which you can get on E-bay, most likely and I think I recall someone saying that you could still get it new retail.

Make sure you get the cables, especially the parallel one as the serial transfer is interesting to watch for, oh, about 5 minutes.

That is a good idea, one that I am looking into right now. Laplink V for DOS will transfer files from DOS systems. The problem is that the software has to be on both machines in order to do the transfer. I do not have a 3 1/2 floppy drive on the machine, nor do I know how to install one. If I had a 3 1/2 floppy on the machine, I would have moved most of the files over a little at a time.

I just updated my website with some information about the Goldstar XT-4. Here is the link for it. http://gilgalad.arc-nova.org/misc/goldstar.html

3½ to 5¼ transfer

3½ to 5¼ transfer

I'll do a transfer of any software onto 360Kb 5¼" floppies for you. Send me a PM with your address and a link to grab the files you want. Or send me a PM to ask for my address to send me 720Kb or 1.44Mb 3½" floppies, and you'll get 5½" floppies by return.

There's also a way using:

copy com1 file.txt

....on the XT end (after using MODE com1 to set params) to squirt programs and such, without having to use anything but already available DOS commands. I wouldn't recommend this for anything other than a simple binary to get Laplink or Interlnk client working (for example).

Paul.

The LL program has a remote install option for getting the program onto the hard drive of the machine without the right size floppy.
The gotcha is that it only works over a serial connection, so if you get a cable, be sure it's one of the six-headed ones, so you can install from serial then move the files across through the parallel port (much faster).
