A Modern Battery Pack for the Epson HX-20

...they were a tight fit, but it made sure my wires wouldn't slip off. I just crimped them in, didn't solder them, so the tightness helped-- and it didn't even crack the plastic.

And for the record, that's exactly what I've done. I decided to stick with Sub-C NiCads. I got some new ones from the local electronic shop and made up a pack by taping them together. It's such a tight fit in the battery holder that I just needed to place the bare wires underneath the lugs as I pushed the pack home. They are fixed there by friction very securely.

The pack is charging up as I type, and for the first time I've been able to use the built-in printer and cassette tape (you can't enable these using the charger only). The cassette seems fine, but the tape in the printer is shot as I expected. I'll look for replacement ribbons on the web.

Soon I'll be able to check out those programs Terry sent me.

There are a couple of things I'd like to get hold of. An RS-232C cable for the beast and a real user and technical manual. I know you can get the latter off the Web as PDFs but nothing beats the real thing. :)

Uh, yep, ERC-09 it is! I have one that is all gummed up. Sigh, time to buy another one and see if it works better. Guess that one was OOS aka old old stock!!

Hi everyone

I'm new here, having just bought a brand new (or at least never-used) Epson HX-20, along with expansion pack. It unfortunately has no power supply. Despite the dire warnings in the literature, is it actually possible to use a standard DC power supply rather than the actual Epson one? If not, anyone know where I might obtain a suitable one?

Thanks in advance!

Hmm..that I don't know. Mine came with a power supply. Someone else on here might be able to answer this question though?

I can say that yes, it will work with a generic power supply. This is how I run mine, but you have to make sure the battery gets at least some charge before you turn it on.

Several of us here have purchased Epson products from that website. In fact, I purchased a brand new PX-8 from there. That purchase is what started me down the LONG vintage computer path again. When I needed replacement batteries for my HX-20, I just purchased the PX-8 nicad pack and spliced on the slightly different battery connector from the HX-20. Works great.

I already owned the PX-8 replacement packs, looks like he also has the correct replacement battery for the HX-20, no splicing required.

Many thanks for this - I will try a generic power supply (having checked polarity!) and see how I get on. The supplier shown is in the US (I'm in the UK) but I will contact them if I can't find one that seems to work satisfactorily.

Thanks again!
