Prototype to the Canon Cat: the "Swyft"...

Hi
I saw the other Swyft today.
I think you were in Forth once and didn't know it.
You shouldn't need a disk. The disk is just for saving
things you write and not needed for booting.
To get into Forth, you press the button after powering
on. You then hit the return.
At this point you should see the OK prompt.
If you type " words " and return at this time you won't see
anything except the OK prompt. This is because you are
in the user vocabulary. If you now type " forth words "
and return, you should see a lot of words.
To return to the editor, just type " re " and return.
There is also some way to enter forth from the
editor. We know this because Bill had saved some
source code in the editor. I know how to do this
on the Cat but it didn't work on the Swyft. It'll
need more investigation.
The disk should be a 720K disk but I've had good
luck using 1.44m disk. The drive on the Swyft
may be different and be more fussy on requiring
the right type of disk.
In the above when I say to type something,
don't type the " . I just put that there to
separate it from normal text.
Give it a try.
The machine Bill has is serial # 11. What is
your serial number?
Dwight

Hi Dwight,

I forgot to check the serial number - I'll try to do that next week. But I followed your instructins above and, sure enough, got the "ok" prompt. Then typed "forth words" and got a scrolling screen, full of words. Thought the processor might conk out with the effort it seemed to take to display all of `em!

Hi
Al has posted the two manuals on his pdf page of bitsavers.
Look for informationappliance as the manufacture ( although he
has misspelled it, which I'm sure he'll fix soon ).
There is enough similarity between the Cat and the Swyft,
that you should get a lot out of both documents.
Working with Bill, we are not sure how to load Forth source
from the editor. It seems to be different than the Cat but
I'm not sure I was doing it right. We know it can be done,
just not sure how.
Dwight

Hi
As far as I know, there were only 60 of these made.

*takes coffee cup off of Swyft and brushes away Cheetos*

Really?

(I'm just kidding, BTW. They were Pringles.)

Hmmm - there seems to be a little wheel on the left side of the keyboard, underneath. Wonder what that's for? Volume? Screen brightness? I'll have to check it out next time I turn it on.
