IBM XT @ tradera.se

This mkght be considered blasphemy but I plan to use an 8-bit SCSI card in it and a SCSI drive instead of that noisy and tiny MFM hdd that's inside it now.....10-20 meg's isn't enough for my needs

If it is the original HDD that the XT's came with, care to sell it ?

Ok. Have you gotten it yet ? What about the mono monitor ? Do you plan to throw it away ?

We have agreed I pick it up tomorrow.

Regarding the monitor..yes...I have no room to store it...a mono monitor is quite useless to me and here in Sweden there's no market for vintage PC gear so I can't sell it......and selling it internationally would be too much work for what I can get for it :(

A friend of mine has an XT-clone without monitor. If it's not to banged up he might want it. I go to sthlm from time to time and could pick it up.

Ok :)
Have hardly any room to store it for a longer time so I would like to know pretty soon when and if someone can pick it up

I'll ask him today, you'll have an answer tonight or tomorrow. It probably depends on how damaged it is. If its only the cable, that can be fixed. So post your impressions (or even a pic) tomorrow.

Cheers.

Just came back from pickup the unit.
The monitor had a heavy burn in on the screen and wasn't an original IBM monitor.
I 've installed a Paradise VGA card in the untit and set the DIP switches accordingly.
When I boot the unit up I get an 1701 error after it's gone thru the memory counting...and the HDD activity light seems to have a life of it's own...guess the HDD is shot?

Does the HDD blink even when only connected to power and not to the MFM controller ? 1701 means: HDD Controller Failure. The HDD is probably shot. What type is it ? Do you hear the stepper motor calibrate ? Also, check the cables for defects.

Care to post some pictures of the unit and the screen ? I'm curious:)

The floppy board and floppy drive has some burnt components also...

will post some pics later but right now the unti is a mess when I'm doing all this testing..

I tested my Seagate ST02 8bit scsi board in it but I think it got toasted also...not when I boot I get "scsi controller failure" message from the board.
Maybe someone put a curse on this old IBM

btw. I binned the monitor since it was totally useless with that burn in and the overall state it was in..

Check the voltage levels. If they're ok, try to remove all cards, and insert some cheap and low quality ISA VGA card. Connect the keyboard and see what's happening on powerup.
If it goes to ROM-BASIC, one of the expansion cards are the problem.

yeah, maybe the PSU is nuking components. Where on the floppy is the burnt components ? Close to the power line or the data part of the PCB ?

One of the chips which look like a DIP DRAM chip has been on fire...don't know if that cause the floppy circuits to burn or vice versa
Well, at least the motherboard is ok and the case, lol
It won't be easy to find replacement parts for a reasonable price...so I guess I'll have to "hotrod" it with an 8bit SCSI card, SCSI drive and some standard 5.25 drive meanwhile

First of all, try it with just a video adapter and see what's happening. Remember to set SW1 to 0 floppy disk drives.

Since you get something understandable on the screen, the 5V must be ok. Maybe the 12V line (used by Floppy drives and hard drives and motorized stuff) is faulty?

Mobo and PSU is ok I think since I get to the ROM BASIC prompt when I bypass the error 601 I get when I don't have the floppy hooked up or hdd
So I got a working unit which lacks working storage units

If you set the swiches on the motherboard correctly, you won't even get the 601 (FDD power on) error.

Note that the components on the motherboard are NOT using the 12V line in any way, exept for providing it in the ISA bus. If the voltage level is faulty, devices in the expansion bus and stuff connected to the PSU using the 12V line will fail.

The B9 and B7 connectors of the ISA bus are the ones carrying the +/-12V line.

*Edit*
I just noticed that there aren't any switch setting for 0 FDD's.
