I found one of these with one 88 MB cartridge and I don't know if it is dead or what.
I pop in a cartridge, the drive spins up, there is a snap, then it spins down after a few seconds, makes another dull snap and then the two LEDs on the front go:
green-green-green-green-green-orange-orange-orange
...and it just cycles that LED sequence over and over.

First thing comes to mind is it must of crashed or something but I have never worked on a drive like this before so I don't know what to expect.

Isn't that just a repackaged Syquest 5110 drive? If so, you might get some help from whatever remains of the SyQuest user community.

I have no idea if it is myself as I have never worked with drives like this before.
I'm assuming that community is here as well, is it not?

Syquest 88 drives are just like the 44mb variety. You insert the cartridge all the way in and then you have to close it with the lever in front to lock it in. I don't think the heads go in until you lock it with that lever arm.

Those things use metal HD platters for storage, I have a 44 and an 88.

I have various types of SyQuest drives and, when what you describe occurs, it is almost 100% probable that the cartridge has been damaged.

I went though about 50 44MB cartridges and any one that displayed that activity wouldn't work in any of the drives.

Attempting to format them, either on a PC or Mac was a "come back tomorrow and we'll let you know how bad it's fracked"

So it's a bad cartridge.
Damn, and there was another big pile of 44MB cartridges there as well that when I went back today were gone.

Is there is a defect in the disk you should be able to see it visually on the platter (head crashes will leave a mark).

Check the dumpster!

Since the cartridge were on the shelf fot at least a day, someone else must of bought them for $20 each (You don't want to know how much I caught Value Village selling 1GB Jaz cartridges for D: )
I checked it over and all I can see are "excessively shiny" spots on the outer edge of the platter.

You've probably already found this site. In brief:
  • The PLI is indeed a SyQuest under the hood.
  • Five green + three amber flashes = your cart is toast.
I like the old 5.25" SyQuest external drives. Throw away the mech and you've got a pretty decent box for SCSI peripherals if you're not averse to drilling a few new mounting holes...

Hmm, so now I will have to source a new pile of cartridges.
I was looking around and I found the software and driver for macs and I'm assuming that it will work with Unix no problem.
