Okay, so I am currently running System 7.5.3 on my Performa 6230 with 32MB of RAM and a 1.2GB HDD. I want to upgrade to System 8.1, but I have a few questions.

1. How do I install it, just open the installer from System 7.5.3 and click through?

2. Does it reformat the harddrive as a part of the install, or do I have to do that myself?

3. Is 32MB enough memory? I can go up to 64, but that would require buying more RAM.

Yup, just run it, and it will install.

If you boot to the install CD, the installer will let you reformat during install; if you run the installer from an existing installation, it will only let you upgrade-in-place.

32 MB is plenty. Remember, the original iMacs came with Mac OS 8.1 and "only" 32 MB of RAM. Unless you're doing Photoshop or Premier, you'll be fine.

Wow, they are hosting Apple system software now? That's not smart - they are already on shaky ground with the whole "abandonware."

I would just get on eBay and buy myself a license under $10.

You might want to get some extra RAM, depending on what you are going to run on it. Internet Explorer will run better if you do.

OS 8.1 cds (retail are white) can be found on ebay all the time. There are OEM 8.1 cd's (shipped with beige G3's and I think they are grey) you should avoid.
