There have been a few developments this week that fans of the CoCo should find interesting - and may peak others interest into the little beast.

Over at coco3.com, a group of guys have discovered a 265 color composite artifact mode that requires no programming tricks. You can catch up on it here:

http://www.coco3.com/community/2009/12/256-composite-colors-screen-capturesphotos/

Over on the CoCo mailing list, a guy has written a Java based server for Cloud9's DriveWire app. You can read about it here:

http://five.pairlist.net/pipermail/coco/2009-December/046336.html

And interact via telnet and actually join in an IRC chat hosted on two separate CoCo's; read about it here:

This has been a great week to be a Tandy Color Computer enthusiast!!!

Thanks for the links Brian!

Very interest stuff. Makes me want to setup my CoCo3 again (512KB w/6309) :)

I'm not sure I understand the 2nd link though. I thought there was a server to serve files/disk images to a CoCo, but I only see something about telneting into the guy's machine.

Those pics are awesome, but as mentioned in the posts on the page, it's a shame it won't work in RGB.

Hi Trevor,

The funny thing about those pictures is, if you view them in the Vcc emulator, they are greyscale in CMP (obviously the mode is not supported in emulation), however, if you set the display type to RGB, you do get color. This is being looked at, but, it would be really cool if the 256 color mode worked in RGB.

DriveWire started out as an application to transfer files between the CoCo and a PC. Aaron took it a step further and created a Java front end I guess, and now it allows you to talk to a CoCo via telnet thru a PC over the internet. File serving, wget and ftp support are very close to being completed as well I understand. Aaron says you can wget "http://www.whatever.com" to view the text content of a website on the CoCo - I haven't tried it as my wireless internet connection is very b/w limited. I did spend a few hours last night IRC chatting via telnet - Aaron was chatting on one CoCo while everyone else was logged into his Drive Wire server to his other CoCo. It was pretty cool.

On another note, Roger at coco3.com is about to finish his CoCoNet ROM, and when paired with his Bluetooth pak, it will offer similar functionality. Added to his also soon to be released MicroSD pak with 2 GB card, and there are a number of interesting products coming out in short order.

web server

web server

thought you guys might want to know that yesterday we brought up the first web server running on a coco.
it handled over 600 connections during it's first 24 hours. there was some down time due to bugs, but I think i've got most (some) of that straightened out now.

if you want to have a web page sent to you from a 25 year old computer: http://home.spogbiper.com

(if you try and it doesn't work.. well it might work a little later :)

I'm seeing 182 visits since last crash! Very good!
I also did the telnet/irc thing and I am most impressed.

I'm always fascinated when I see older machines doing this sort of thing. It's part of the reason I got into this hobby.

Seems like the coco is making progress by "leaps and bounds" this week!

Hi everyone,

Looks like Aaron, Jim and Boisy have made some great strides in the project. The web page is still being served and updated. Can't wait for the Java app to be released. This looks like lots of fun to set up. Also looks like they are well on their way to make a fantastic showing in the RetroChallenge.

beta

beta

Thanks, winning the RetroChallenge was unexpected but very cool :)

Thought I'd drop a note that our first beta is now available:

http://sites.google.com/site/drivewire4/beta

Still quite a few rough edges, but it's been running my coco web server for a few weeks now without too many problems. We're very interested to know how it works for others and want to try and solve as many issues as possible prior to releasing an official version. We'd appreciate any help from fellow CoCo fans.

We've also got an IRC channel up for help with the beta or just any Coco related chat, on freenode #coco_chat
