Free or For Sale Cheap! A Whole Lot of PC/Mac/Sun/SGI stuff in Madison, Alabama

It might be worth the drive down. I remember seeing at least two stacks of cpus over 3ft high.

Yeah, it might be worth the drive, but, I doubt I could talk someone into driving down to Alabama just to pick me up a couple of dozen old computers. I don't drive anymore.

If there aren't any keyboards, which had a proprietary pinout, they would be pretty much useless though.

Major drives in the snow are not fun, if this place was an hour or two from where I live in the spring/summer/fall I would go. Never know what else you may find that is not mentioned.

Just got back from checking this stuff out. I bought a couple things myself... the Amiga and a Macintosh IIci. The Amiga turned out to be a 4000/040 model and had a Video Toaster 4000 card and it looks like an ethernet card in it (albeit coax). It does have the typical battery damage on the motherboard, haven't tried it out yet, and it didn't have the keyboard or mouse.

I saw a lot of Sun workstations (Ultra 5s, Sparcstations, etc), a few DEC ones I didn't recognize, the Proliant stuff, looked like a big RAID array and the server itself. A few all-in-one color Macs, a few PowerMac models, a G3 tower. Lots of Apple parts for beige cased models (drive sleds and whatnot), printer parts... brand new Imagewriter ribbons, etc. There were a couple big DEC machines in there, no idea what they were. They were the size of big refrigerators.

Did you happen to see any older Heath or Zenith computers or accessories (pre-PC Compatible, such as the H-8, H-11, H89, or H100)?

I'm afraid not. Pretty much everything I saw was from the early-mid 90's vintage... apart from the DEC behemoth and a couple Mac II variant machines (II, IIfx, IIci, IIcx...). There was a Mac IIfx there, but I was disappointed to discover it had some significant battery damage to the mobo. I think about the only thing he had earlier than that was one Apple 5.25" drive, and a C-64 he said he had somewhere. As Samir pointed out, he claimed he trashed approximately 100 all-in-one black and white macs of different types some time ago (SEs, SE/30s, etc..) because at the time they were virtually worthless or not worth shipping. He said he wished he had hung onto those now in retrospect. :)

If you're into SGI stuff, there were a few SGI Indys.
There were several Apple Performa color all in one machines, and a few beige PowerPC macs
Lots of all in one Apple 68040 mobos, SCSI drives and Apple drive brackets.

There were two storage lockers of stuff he was condensing to one unit. I think he said he had yet another storage unit with more stuff(?) but not sure about that. I suspect that he probably wouldn't have anything older than 90's in that either if that's indeed the case.

I could use a decent looking Mac II for my collection (I have the IIx and IIfx models). If you go back around there let me know if there is anything inside or if it is stripped.

Pretty much all the Mac II stuff was yellowed pretty good. Maybe a bath in some Retr0brite will take care of it...I'm going to give it a shot once I clean it up. A lot of the stuff either came from the local school district or from the government, so there are asset tracking stickers on a lot of stuff, or sticky goo from stickers. There's a couple marks from these labels on the IIci I got that I'm not sure will come off completely (some of those tamper proof stickers have some caustic glue that can melt the plastic). I also grabbed the wrong type of hard disk mounting bracket. (d'oh!)

Glad you were able to pick up some of the stuff. The storage units had a lot more room in them today since I last went there, and I wrote down a bunch of model numbers today of stuff I saw. The Compaq Proliants are Pentium Pro models, so I was mistaken about them being Pentiums.

How do we get in contact with the fellow to make offers/negotiate/arrange shipping, or is this stuff really only available if we pick up locally? I'd really appreciate knowing what condition that IIfx (and the other macs) are in.

He's not going to be interested in going through the trouble of shipping unless you're planning on making an offer that's worth his while (aka way more than market price). I don't mind getting something and shipping it for you, and I have a UPS account with daily rates to help with shipping costs, but with me not being with the equipment and being as busy as I am, it will take a lot of back and forth. And again, it would have to be enough to compensate me for doing it as well. But being jobless, that compensation wouldn't be much.

For the most part, it's just pick up locally. I don't go there often and don't really know what to look for on the Macs (or really any older computers for that matter), so the best I could do is take pictures when I have time.

Did you have any luck with your new a4000?

Later,
dabone

Not yet. I haven't done any hard core debugging with it just yet. I did remove the battery and cleaned up the corrosion, ohmed out some nets around the clock chip, and checked the power supply was putting out the right voltages (but haven't checked for ripple). The affected area is reasonably small, so hopefully not too much damage has been done. I need to drag out the oscilloscope and to some serious debugging.

I got off the phone with him earlier today and in the consolidation of storage spaces, he's found a Powermac 8000 series and 9000 series. Also, the huge laser printers will be tossed soon if the salvage guy coming Monday doesn't take them or the *working* Sanyo 32" CRT television.

I just ran across this thread today... I'm not too far away (down in Montgomery) and have always thought it would be nice to have an example of my first computer, a Sanyo 555 or 550, but it sounds like most of the stuff is newer than that....

If you're interested in old computers in general it may be good to visit. A lot of this stuff is getting harder and harder to find as they get tossed/recycled. You might not find exactly what you want, but you may find something you wouldn't mind having. That said, I don't recall seeing much that was older than about 1990 vintage.

There were a few old Power Macintosh models there if that tickles anyone's fancy. Also a stack of motherboards from all-in-one 68040 based macs (Performa 5xx I think).
