eBay this appears to be a IBM 5150 Rev A.

twolazy:

the guy is supposed to be sending me some pics of the motherboard and any cards installed as wll as other info about the PC. If you would like to see them, let me know. I really just need a case cover, I have two of the 64k rev a already but one is without a case cover, I purchased it just to have some spare parts. Now I am looking for a 5151 monitor 001 or 002.

Thanks,

Jimmy

I can't remember who it was here in the forums who has a 5162 that he was willing to sell. If memory serves me correctly, all he had was the case, mobo and power supply with an ISA memory expansion and a VGA graphics adapter. He had the original keyboard too, but that was about it. I went through my old messages and couldn't find anything. Maybe I deleted it while cleaning house. If I remember, I'll shoot you both a line.

That would most likely be me! ROFL! Just realized it , going over the thread again. I have the 5162 thats nearly all original, sans motherboard. (motherboard is a 386sx clone of the AT board, which i reversed to a 286) :S I was thinking of separating with it to align my collection more, and could easily setup another system similar.

I also have another spare XT-286 chassis and PSU in my garage, that I love to make 100% original. Paid 15 for it at a local scrap yard. Seen it sitting in the back with some car batteries on it so I rescued it. :)

Was all excited I finally found what I wanted, sadly no. Inside was a baby AT socket 7 motherboard ROFL. One of these days I'll find the motherboards to complete at least one of them... I'm not paying over 100 dollars tho. Ambry.com has some for 45 shipped, im tempted...

Only XT I have thats truly complete is my 5150 atm. :(

I know exactly what you mean about getting excited. That's how I was too when I nailed down the original 5161 expansion unit. I was STOKED for days! And then to have the seller deny my original offer of $125.00 only to counter with $40.00 only made it better. I almost peed my shorts! (Wait a minute, I'm a nudist, oh, sorry. TMI) Well y'all know what I mean. There is still one thing I want to finally get my grubby little mits on though. Sadly, I have made deals but things have been going all wrong. I want a 1st or 2nd generation of Compaq Portable so badly.... Like I said though. Things just keep popping up. And to top it all off, I'm still on disability after breaking my leg in November! This is really the pits!

Naw. I want one of the earlier ones. That is a 3rd revision I believe. The one I really want only has a small screen, and the floppy drives all hidden behind the keyboard. When the keyboard is removed from the bottom of the computer, and the computer laid down, the display and floppy drives all face the user... These come available from time to time. I just have to wait till I have the money on my spending account.

Here were the CRT-based Compaq Portables:

Portable (later revision with half-height drives)

Portable Plus: same thing but with 1 floppy + 1 hard drive instead of dual floppies
Portable 286: same thing but with 286 instead of 8088

Portable II

Starting with the Portable III, Compaq switched to a "lunchbox" design with a flat panel display (first neon orange gas plasma, then later monochrome LCD) and the drives on the side.

I thought he wanted an Altair. Regarding the original auction, it was reposted and seems (I think) to have some additional pictures. One of them I think is new that does seem to show 64 KB 256KB CPU I'm pretty sure on the motherboard (it's sorta an odd angle but I think it's the motherboard not the card). There's another one the same seller has here that surprisingly has a higher start price of $100 and already 1 bid. Not sure why but again I don't know that model well enough to determine motherboard revision from the screws or bottom. It does seem to have a SCSI, Parallel, serial, and video card.

Thanks for the pics. Yeah, either of the 1st two revisions would be fantastic for me. And yeah, I do too want an altair, but that's more wishfel thinking on my part. The Compaq portable is much more in my price range. As far as the rest of the conversation up to this point, mits is hands, and mot mittens, or kittens. When I can afford it, I'll get one. I'll have one by the end of this year, no doubt. That's my goal. Then maybe I'll start looking for the Altair.

Thanks everyone for the laugh. We can be a funny bunch in here.

But an aftermarket XT/Baby AT-type motherboard wouldn't fit into a 5-slot 5150 case, at least not without some serious cutting and trimming of the case's metal to accomodate the differences in keyboard port and ISA slot placement.

There may have been a rare handful of aftermarket motherboards specifically designed to fit in a 5-slot IBM 5150 case (I have not seen proof; I'm just guessing about the possibility) -- in which case the collector's value of the board would easily equal or exceed that of the original IBM motherboard it replaced.

I can confirm the existence of a clone 5-slot PC. It was an 8 MHz 8088 made by AlphaNumeric, Inc. in Santa Fe Springs, CA. When I tried to upgrade mine to an 8-slot 386 the new motherboard would not fit the case for that reason. I still have the owner's manual to remind me.

Can you add shipping for New Zealand on ebay? Preferably the cheapest - I don't mind waiting 3 months for someone to paddle it over here.
I need a 5150 system board + original keyboard to finish mine, but I think this delivered might work out at the same price and it looks so much nicer!

If I did buy it, I have suitable spare parts to keep it maintained and a matching IBM 5151 to pair it with.

Unfortunately the post office no longer offers overseas surface shipping (by boat), so airmail is the only option. A rough estimate for shipping to New Zealand is US$146.59 for Priority Mail International.

Cheers for checking that out, much appreciated.
Will watch the bids :) When I was buying parts - keyboard for me would be $100USD delivered, and my last board cost me around $130USD and turned up non-functioning.

You have a late model A system with 360K drives IMHO. This one is not from the original 1st released batch. The serial number is high. There are also several different black power suppies. Yours is a later model....

Framer:

What is the serial number range for the first released batch, I also think that the top bolts on the black power supplies were not recessed on the early release, any infor that you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Did most of the originals go to IBMers or were most released to the general public?

Thanks,

Jimmy
