It probably took quite a lot of trial and error to get all 64 colors to display properly, especially those darkest 16 colors which often did not display correctly on EGA cards & monitors.
I think its an EGA card that has been hacked to work on an RGB analogue monitor. I can tell you its not a pre-production prototype unless both chips on the daughter board have been changed and looking at the soldering on it I think that is unlikely. The give away is the date codes on the chips. All the chips on the main board are coded 84nn where nn is typically circa 35 so thats week 35 of 1984. This ties up with the release of the EGA car which was according to
was September 1984 so the chances are its an early card. However if you look at the daughter card the date codes on those chips are 8537 and 8546 so towards the last quarter 1985 which is well after the initial announcement. So its either some kind of field change to fix a bug, or some kind of mod so it can be used with a cheaper monitor.
