Hello all,

So, here I am with my new-to-me Apple IIGS system. I have a ROM 3 system with one 3.5 inch floppy drive and one 5.25 inch floppy drive. (And, I could borrow two more 5.25 inch floppy drives from my packed away Apple IIC+, if I want to.)

So, I am seeing that this system emulates an Apple II system very nicely. I also have a system disk for ProDOS 5.0.4, and you may have seen my posting about a bit of difficulty with Disk 7 of ProDOS 6.0.1, AKA GS/OS 6.0.1, elsewhere. These are 16 bit OS versions for the IIGS with a graphical user interface, similar to the original Macintosh.

So, I can load either of the versions of the GS/OS, but once I have it in there, the system disk is now occupying the 3.5 inch drive, and in either case, the system disk is pretty much full (almost a whopping 800K!). In order to use a significant application, say Hypercard Reader (this is a 500-and-something-K application), I have to go through a bunch of disk swaps between the application disk and the system disk, and then, I usually end up with the system disk in the drive, and the application running, but the Hyperstack that I want to see is actually on the disk that's in my hand, and the application is not aware of the disk, because it isn't in the drive. Aaarrrggghhh! I haven't gone through this since the old days of my Mac 512KE with no external drive! ;)

BTW, I am on the waiting list for a CFFA3000, so probably in a month or so, things will get much, much better for me.

Is anyone out there using a IIGS system with floppy drives as the primary method of storage (or do you remember back when you did)? It looks to me like a minimum system to be operating as a 16 bit system with GS/OS (and not simply emulating an Apple //e) would have had to have at least two 3.5 inch drives, and at least one 5.25 inch drive, but probably two of those, also.

Anyway, I'm having a blast with this. :) Please let me know what your experiences have been!

Your floppy disk shuffle experience is typical for someone without a second (or more) 3.5 drive and/or a sufficiently large enough RAM card, to create a RAMdisk. Without a decent aftermarket RAM card *and* mass storage, the IIGS is more or less constrained to running like a super //e with the benefit of running Apple IIGS games (that self-boot).

Your CFFA3K will greatly alleviate nearly all your problems, though you may want to acquire a 4MB RAM card. Then you'll have plenty of RAM to run 6.0.1 and the largest of IIGS apps.

Cool! Thanks for the affirmation.

I have an Apple 1M memory expansion card from another IIGS computer I acquired that has problems on the motherboard (another separate topic I've posted about here). Looks like I need to get that installed, so I can at least set up some sort of a RAM disk in the near term.

I'll keep my eyes open for a larger RAM card, as well.

Vince Briel has new 4MB card up for sale on his site, you can buy the card with or without 4x 1mb 30pin SIMMS, $49 for bare card, or $89 for fully populated 4MB.

I bought mine from him probably 6 or 7 years ago, that 4MB card, and my original CFFA (Run 3 or 4) card were probably the most useful upgrades to date that I have put in my IIgs (though the SCSI card is handy too, but not a necessity with a CFFA).

Hi!

Thanks very much. You know, for some reason, I don't think of Briel Computers for Apple accessories. I need to keep them in mind. Yes, that's an excellent way to go, and I think I will. $89 sounds very reasonable for 4MB.

A new question: Do I have to worry about the IIGS power supply, if I am adding a CFFA 3000 and a Briel 4MB card?

Thanks!

No, a properly functioning power supply is capable of running a well-equipped system with most slots filled (even with an accelerator). If you add 3-4 cards, Apple recommended adding their internal fan (waste of internal space/money). The Kensington System Saver for the IIGS is a better option. The GS case is designed to cool itself via convection, but cards add heat and prevent air-flow -- the KSS provides an external boosting fan for cooling.

I have the internal "apple fan" in mine, it is large, and it does block the 1st slot from using full length cards, but I just stick my CFFA in that slot, since its a shorter card it still fits, even with the fan sticking out.

The only time I would worry about overloading the stock PSU would be with full complement of cards, including CPU accelerator, AND an internal hard drive, like older "hardcards", or Vulcan drives (which is why vulcan drives were inside a PSU replacement).

With your current configuration, including planned addition of CFFA and RAM, you would be good to go :-D
