It is mentioned in Chuck(G)'s post near the end of that thread, just try your existing cable but pull Pin 4 to GND per NESTOR's advice a few posts up from this one.

I connect the pin 4 of rubber cable to black wire of 4 pin power of floppy but it's the same thing the floppy is recognized by pc but can't write or read it

The error is (translate from italian) : General error during write on drive A
Cancel, Retry, Omits?

I noticed another thing: if go on information of drive a: without any floppy inside in ms dos shell i have size: 2661 what does it mean?

However here u are the scheme of my cable View attachment 13105

It looks right to me, but this was all speculation, no one has ever confirmed that a standard floppy drive would work on a Model 30 or 25 before, just OTHER PS2 models.

So at this point you might be out of luck, I would start to focus on repairing or obtaining a Stock Model 30 drive. It is likely all that is wrong with your stock drive is bad capacitors, a common failure on these drives.

Thanks! Just order from usa a model 30 drive and i have stopped to waste my time...

I've got a old ps2 floppy finally! But also this one doesn't read floppy!... What can i try? How can i change capacitors? If i try to format a: it tells me formatting 360kb and than paramters don't support from drive. I think the pc think my 1.44 floppy is 360k. Why???:dontgeti:

I've faced with the same problem on my IBM PS/2 Model 30 286.
Initially my IBM came to me without floppy drive but with MS-DOS installed on hard drive. I've bought floppy drive from another guy. It was alps too, but, unfortunately, it's head is mechanically broken.
Trying to connect standard floppy using the same thread (http://www.vintage-computer.com/vcf...r-1-44-floppy-drive-in-my-ibm-model-30-(8086)) I get the same result - no errors about floppy during POST but system threats drive as 360K. But I've not tried to do something with Pin 4, however.

renton82, can you boot setup diskette using your new original drive?
Probably there is a problem in controller? I'm going to try connect 5.25" DS/DD floppy drive and try to use it... :)

The last post was over 2 years ago and they have not been here since, you are unlikely to get a response from Renton82.

Great thanks for your reply. I've tested my PS/2 floppy (with broken mechanics) and it saying that it is 360K as well as standard floppy.
I've made new cable but it didn't help. I hope there is a chance to repair it using working original PS/2 floppy if I get it. Unfortunately it is rare and expensive in Russia :(
Anyway I also will try to make another cable using new connectors instead of re-used...
Also could you, please, send me exact model of your working floppy? It is possible that my ALPS is not compatible with model 30286...
Thank you!

Yes, it is possibile, the only one i am reached to work, is the original one... like this : http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=271777019504&alt=web

Thank you for your reply. I've realized that I've used two cables: first came with computer and the second one I made myself for connect standard floppy. So I'm going to make new cable using fresh connectors instead of used. Will see... There is a chance that cables are broken :)

Hello all.
This is an old thread but it applies to a system I just bought. I have the 8530-E21 Model 30/286 and need the part number for the 1MB x4 modules or if anyone has any for sale I am in need. Maybe other parts for this unit as well.

Regards!

join the club pal. i'm in the market for about 20 of them. :(

They appear somewhat regularly on eBay and Craigslist. Also on the IBM PS/2 newsgroup sometimes. Canabalizing PS/2s is usually the easiest way to get a working system from my experience.

Thank you for your useful reply. I did buy a set on eBay but didn't work; I inserted them and removed them several times just to buy sure they were seated well but the screen went blank and nada. Put my 256KB modules back in and no problems.

I didn't think about Craigslist. Eh not been on it too much and when I was I never found it as easy as eBay to navigate. Guess it's experience!

Thanks again.

Do you by chance have an FRU for the 1MB modules?

I was thinking about making new SIMMs for this unit, I have one myself and I need the 4MB SIMMs as well.

I do know the 3 chip simms are not supposed to work, but my unit has 3 chip SIMMS in it and they work fine. but only a total of 1MB.

Anyway. I am going to layout a new SIMM PCB that is compatible with this machine, but I need to figure out first though which chips will work the best in it. I think the trick is, to match the timing of the replacement RAM to that of the RAM that actually works. Sure this machine is picky, but.. if you match the timing, it wont matter from that point.
