I really don't hold out to much hope of finding one of these but if anyone has a junk model 1 board maybe can pull part or send junk board to me. My MCM6670 works but in lower case the "a" is up high and the p,q,y,g etc do not have descenders. Supposedly the newer versions do support descenders. It's at Location Z29 on the board.

Let me know what you have. I do not want a working TRS-80.

Looked in my TRS junk box, 'cause I remember having a char gen out there. No luck - I'm in the same boat with an 8046670 chip.

Also found a 24 pin chip marked "BASIC 1" which I assume is an old Level 1 BASIC ROM, and three 24-pin chips marked 8044316A. No idea what those are anymore - or why I'd have 3 of 'em!

Looking up that 8044316A it says it is a character generator for the TRS-80 Model III & possibly Model IV. Want to get rid of the Basic 1 ROM?

Thanks for that info - it explains why I have a 2716 in the same bin labeled "bold char gen". It seems that there was a generator that gave a display similar to the IBM mono display adapter. I'll have to try it in one of the Mod 4s.

Want to get rid of the Basic 1 ROM?

Ummm, no. But, if you know the pinout, I could throw it in the burner and send you a bin or hex file of the contents.

I just looked in a couple of Model I's I have and they have part numbers of SCM37530P and Tandy part number 8046673, which a search of e-bay yields a seller in England with three of them for sale. See listing for item number 400360922098. Perhaps this is what you're looking for.
