I have been looking on Ebay for an upgrade NEC V20 chip, but i'm not sure if there is differences i need to be aware of (some chips have different specifications).

Would anyone be able to point me to one that will work on a Tandy 1000 SL/2?

Sorry if this is a noob question. I have done some upgrades to mine including building a Lo-tech XT-IDE Compact Flash card (which is working great btw!), and am trying to give it a bit more speed for nostalgia sake.

Thanks.

Just got my NEC V30. Installed it, and it works like a charm! Its a modest speed boost, but an improvement none-the-less.

Also found a killer deal on a Mediavision Thunderboard that works fantastic for soundblaster/adlib sound (and tandy sound still works too!), and an Oak 16bit vga card that also works well on 8bit slots.

It's fun maxing out these old machines, because back then, you would have spent a lot of $$$ to do it. I think in total i've spent about $80 for everything (including my homebuilt xt-ide cf card), but it was totally worth it for the nostalgia.

Thanks

The Thunderboard is hardwired to use DMA1, which is what the built-in PSSJ digital sound of the 1000SL uses. You should experience crashes if you try to use a program that uses digital sound for Sound Blaster/Thunderboard or Tandy PSSJ DAC.

Oh. Did not know that - haven't experienced any issues so far. Soundblaster compatible games for this class of computer were fairly limited though, so perhaps I just haven't encountered one yet. Adlib sound works exceptionally well though - far better than the alternative of trying to find a true adlib card.

Here is my video on uprgading the Tandy 1000SL. The 1000SL/2 is the same except that it came with 640K RAM as standard and a 3.5" 720K floppy drive, as well as slightly newer revisions of DOS and DeskMate.
