@A4000Bear
Could you explain how you cleaned the PCB and resprayed the case, please?
I've got a 3016 here with a rusty case and dirty PCB (the monitor board is even filthier!) and I've no idea how best to proceed. Any advice you can offer would be gratefully received!
Thanks
JonB
There are quite a few ways to clean a PCB, it seems everyone has their favourite method. This is how I have been doing it for 30 years and I have found it works well.
After carrying out any repairs required, I clean the board on both sides with plenty of methylated spirits and a small paint brush. An old toothbrush can be used for stubborn areas. Once cleaned, and while still wet with the methylated spirits, rinse under clean running water. Have it as hot as you can stand. Use the paint brush to make sure all areas are rinsed. Once finished shake as much excess water off as possible and place the board in a warm place to dry. If it's a warm to hot sunny day, put it in the sun for a few hours. If it's cold, I place the board on top of one of those column heaters for a few hours. The aim is to have the board as warm as possible without it being too hot to touch.
If you are cleaning the monitor PCB, I would recommend removing the flyback transformer before cleaning, and cleaning it separately without water, due to the fact it generates the EHT for the CRT, and will be several thousands of volts. Moisture and that kind of voltage don't mix!
For the cabinet, sand any rust spots with fine sandpaper until any loose rust is removed and the surface is smooth. Clean the affected areas with phosporic acid from the hardware store (It's corrosive so use gloves/goggles etc) This converts any remaining rust to a phosphate and helps inhibit further rust.. Give the cabinet a good soapy clean and rinse thoroughly. The base can be sprayed with a semi-gloss black metal paint. The top can be sprayed with the appropriate colour metal paint. I use Dulux MetalShield finish in 'Evening Haze' colour. It's very close to the original, being very slightly darker. This paint is available in Australia and New Zealand. I don't know it it is available elsewhere.
