Now that I have built my system, I was wondering whether there are any sites that one could download vintage games like those made by sierra/lucas arts. I don't mind buying games, and it is my intention to buy the ones that I enjoy. I already know I will buy all the space quest, LSL and police quest games.

I have a CD with about 100 games from 1992 - 1994 that a friend of mine put together back then. He had excellent taste in games. :) If you'd like a look at the list lemme know and I'll send you the particulars.

PM hargle. He's done amazing work archiving and making so many classics available.

Its not online but suprisingly goodwill and thrifts like savers. I know those places suck for console system games but there gold mines for old school big box PC stuff. I routeinly find cib old school games for 2-5$ at these places. This includes stuff from the 80's and mid 90's not just win 9x games. I've lived in both Pittsburgh and phoenix and found nice stuff in both areas so its can't be a regional thing.

So far I have never seen diskette based games really here on LI. But they pop up on Goodwill's website regularly.

So far I have never seen diskette based games really here on LI. But they pop up on Goodwill's website regularly.

just last week I found the original simcity, alone in the dark and kings quest V on diskette mostly CIB at Savers. few weeks before that I picked up A-train, F-19 stealth fighter and Gunship 2000 in perfect condition and CIB. most of the stuff I find is mid 90's stuff on CD but older stuff i would definitely not call rare, at least in my searches.

I think I picked up Gunship 2000 before and found it wasn't the old Gunship I remembered. But yes, thrift shops aren't often but sometimes you do find some nice dos games. I may have mentioned it earlier in this thread also but Half-Price Books while often questionable pricing sometimes carries/gets old games donated that they sell off. I know over the years I've found Alone in the Dark and 7th Guest there although usually not in original boxes.

oh yhea. half priced is another good option. erratic pricing at times though. I did pick up a sealed People's General and that weird win9x KISS FPS game for $2 on my last run there.

Games to download? I've used this site for a while - The House of Games. This site has a really cool collection of old Vintage games to download, some of which even have screencaps of the game itself along with text manuals of the game.
Definitely worth a look.

If you want vintage games but don't care whether they are boxed or not, then www.gog.com is your best bet for cheap games (most are $5-$10) and they have a very wide selection.
The games are packaged with DosBox to run on modern systems and use some kind of custom instaler, although you could probably get them to run on period hardware with a bit of work.
They run a summer and winter sale where games are half off, they frequently run other sales that are up to 75 percent off. You can build quite a library very quickly that way.
The only bad thing is they don't really have much from before the early or mid 90s so if you're looking for really old stuff from the 80s, with the exception of a handfull of titles you're probably going to be out of luck. Most stuff is from the 486/Pentium/Pentium II/III era, with a few more modern games.

Hi,

gog.com is great if you still want to financially support the original developers/publishers. In most cases the games there come with exclusive bonus stuff like wallpapers, pdf manals, maps etc.

Then there is archive.org, where Jason Scott and his folks provide great (huge) bundles of platform-specific collections. Have a look around starting here: https://archive.org/details/software
