I've finally had a chance to see if there is anything special about this cable, specifically how it's shielded and whether there are twisted pairs etc.

Well, here's a photo with the hood off the D62 connector:

No twisted pairs and no pair shielding etc, so any generic cable, with shielding, should be fine.

As using the IBM cable is like wrestling with a python, I've Been using a cable from Amphenol without any issues:

-62-Pin (HD62) Deluxe High-Density D-Sub Cable Assembly by Amphenol
-Connectors: HD62 male to HD62 male D-Sub connectors pre-installed
-Cable: 28 AWG UL listed with copper tape + aluminum mylar shields
-Straight-through wiring (i.e. pin 1 to pin 1) design per industry standards
-100% EMI/RFI shielded design combines aluminum mylar and copper tape
-Fully populated with Gold-plated contacts for superior signal continuity

Go with the 2.5' cable, as with most cables, the shorter the better (the genuine IBM cable is 3' not inc connectors).

Just thought I would confirm that after nearly 12 months, I have not had any apparent issues with the Amphenol HD62 cable which connects my 5161.

I've been using the 2.5 foot version and now intend to test the 5 foot version, has anyone tried this? Or even the 10 foot version?

And before further people ask, no I'm not willing to sell my original IBM cable. It also works well, however it's just too inflexible for my needs whilst I suspect that the electrical characteristics of the 21st century Amphenol cables may be superior; cables technologies have come a long way in nearly 30 years.

Personally, I would go with the Amphenol cable over http://cyberresearch.com/store/data-acquisition-control/pc-computer-cables/CBL_6203_7356.5.htm

Amphenol generally produce very high quality products. The specs on the Cyberresearch cable are a little vague, no mention of shielding etc.

Amphenol's specs include:
-Cable: 28 AWG UL listed with copper tape + aluminum mylar shields
-Straight-through wiring (i.e. pin 1 to pin 1) design per industry standards
-Perfect for low-voltage signals & DCE/DTE RS232 serial communications
-100% EMI/RFI shielded design combines aluminum mylar and copper tape
-Fully populated with Gold-plated contacts for superior signal continuity
-Rugged UL94V-0 flame-resistant PVC jacket and overmold for strain relief
-300V voltage handling capacity at temperatures up to 80 degrees Celsius
