Easiest way to get 16 MHz CPU running on any XT board?

I wonder if a possible tact would be a V40 or 80188, since that supplants "more" of the motherboard facilities. That might take the 8284 and maybe the 8288 out of contention. I have a "modern XT" machine (one of the old Homebrew8088 designs) that runs a 20MHz-labelled V40, with SRAM and 70ns...

    Pocket 386

Maybe the floppy card wanted one +5 or ground pin that wasn't wired through, and one of the other cards provided a bridge between the floating pin and the wired one? That could be tested-- check continuity between the various voltage and ground pins.

    Perifractic wants to buy Commodore

The problem competing in that market isn't technical or price. When I went through my last years of HS, most kids in my (fairly affluent) school who were taking the higher math classes bought an original TI-83, and I got a Casio CFX-9850G. Colour (although insipid, non-backlit, worthless...

    Perifractic wants to buy Commodore

I think in some sectors it's an attempt to buy instant credibility. This probably works better for "normie" products, where a customer might remember Grandma's Zenith 19" CRT TV and be more willing to trust a Zenith 60" LCD instead of the same set branded Keqing Electric. I suspect if you...

Commodore - Lets talk about The New Zombie on the block.

He's been showing renders of SMD versions; I'm not sure if the most recent ones he's preparing for early developers are SMD or still through-hole for bodgability. I do give credit for "make it cheap enough to be fun", and I'm more excited about it than the x16 because it feels like it's likely...

Commodore - Lets talk about The New Zombie on the block.

TBH, I feel like any modern followon that's not compatible is never going to be the same. If you build a 6502/65816 flavoured machine in 2025, it's only going to service a specific narrow audience, and that's only going to generate games and demos. One of the unusual things about vintage...

Commodore - Lets talk about The New Zombie on the block.

"Reusing old ROMs" would just take one old machine out of circulation for every new one built. You need the authority to distribute new copies. A hobbyist might get away with it, but I doubt you could open a business without a cease-and-desist showing up eventually. Similarly, the new clones...

Commodore - Lets talk about The New Zombie on the block.

I could see a narrow path to leverage it for legal defense against knockoff products. But you have two contingencies there: * Will NewCommodore do an adequate job of vetting products where people would say "It's worth looking for the logo"? As ClassicHasClass mentions, we already have a world...

Proper measurements for 5.25" bay on PS/2 model 76?

Those plastic trays aren't a super-precise fit. Try to find one of the old ones with a plastic bezel mounted to a metal frame.

What 21st century computers do you think will be collectible?

That's an interesting thing in and of itself. We tend to do a poor job of saving "representative" things for museums. For example, if you look at the surviving selection of steam locomotives (in the US), they tend to skew towards the exotic and "special". Right of the 25 Union Pacific Big...

Thrift Store Find, need help, gift for wife!

They're pretty bad about cross-range compatibility. I had a couple of Graphire tablets and a Thinkpad X230t with a Wacom digitizer, and none of the pens would work with the Intuos tablets I found at junk shops; I've just started ignoring them when normally I'm all over expensive cool input...

ISA to USB - Are these anywhere to be found?

It doesn't have a great API in general, like there's no change detection that I can see, and I'm not sure there's a way to enumerate the different devices.

ISA to USB - Are these anywhere to be found?

One thing to pay attention to with the modules is that there are different types with different pinouts; I think some are not wired for an 8-bit parallel output by default, or the pinout is different, so they might not be drop-in interchangeable.

New Retro Case - A bit pricey but very clever

IME Rustoleum Heirloom White is a very good "side panel beige", but you might want something more "almondy" for the front panel if you want to give the impression of slightly yellowed plastic.

New Retro Case - A bit pricey but very clever

There was an era of Compaq where the blanking plates had an indent sort of in the space you'd usually have cut away in a 5.25 drive, but not particularly assertively "fake drive" For example (not my pic) It looks like they did a similar recess in the 3.5 bezel.
