Mac Plus with Stuck Floppy Eject

Most likely culprit is the eject gear. The gear teeth are probably all chewed up. Do internet search for Macintosh floppy disk eject gear, you'll find many hits for sellers of this 3D printed gear. I've replaced two of these, it's not very difficult.

    Win 3.1 question

I've installed and ran Win 3.0 on the Tandy 1000 TL (XT-class 286, 8 bit data bus) in glorious 640x200 4-color mode.. the machine has 640k and a 2MB Lo-tech EMS board. Win 3.0 will utilize the EMS, so it can run a little more than just Paint and Notepad at the same time, but extremely and...

Best approach to IDE/CF in an IBM AT

I've burned the XTIDE 16-bit version BIOS to a couple ROMs and shoved those into an AT clone with spare ROM sockets. Details on how I split the BIOS image before programming the chips are here: https://forum.vcfed.org/index.php?threads/ems-16-bit-access.1249201/post-1401145

The Rise (or Residence) of Toxic Professionalism in DIY

I love what this thread has morphed into. That's some amazing handywork you've all showcased. Thank you all for sharing. I've dug one of my kludges out of the closet for this thread.. This thing plays VGM files from SD card on that YM2151 synth chip on the breadboard. MCU is a PIC18F47K42. It...

Anyone ever kill anything by electrostatic discharge?

Took me awhile to realize why some folks seem to have cavalier attitude to ESD. I believe it is climate related. I'm somewhat obsessive about ESD, during this time of the year (January in Michigan). All day long, seemingly every metal object I touch goes zap, zap, zap. At home, at work, in the...

The Rise (or Residence) of Toxic Professionalism in DIY

Should probably have mentioned.. this is life-safety-critical equipment we are building. Meaning, we build equipment guys rely on to keep them from being killed on their jobs. Should have mentioned that from the get-go.. And Mr. Beneficial Toxic No-Nonsense is exactly the man you want overseeing...

The Rise (or Residence) of Toxic Professionalism in DIY

No he did not, because at that point it was understood that I ought to be outputting quality. I should have known. Like I said, they were lapses in quality, and I deserved the dress down I received. I've known the guy for a decade now. He's abrasive as hell. But if I truly needed help with that...

The Rise (or Residence) of Toxic Professionalism in DIY

Yeah, being accused "poor workmanship" is devastating. I should know.. I had an engineer where I work take pictures of my lapses in soldering quality, blow them up to 8x11, print it out in color, and call me out in the most unpleasant manner he could muster. I would imagine the feeling being...

The Rise (or Residence) of Toxic Professionalism in DIY

I truly do not understand what people mean when they say "toxic this.." and "toxic that.." Could you provide an example of such behavior actually happening? Have never seen anything I would consider "toxic." Quite frankly, that word often gets used as a tactic to silence others' critique by...

What's Windows 3.x real mode good for, in terms of apps and usage?

If you do an internet search for "W3RMCSL_03_20032021.zip" and "W3RMSCL 0.3 - Test List.pdf" you will find, on that other site, a forum post with links to these files. Therein, one may find a large collection of Windows 3.0 real mode software and a video compatibility test list pdf. I've been...

Serial port access on XT vs AT/Pentium

Your interpretation of my jumbled, rambling, mess of glyphs, is indeed correct. This is just how I'm used to testing serial ports. I'll do it either this way, or buck those RX/TX down to 5V and use the logic analyzer. It probably sounds like I'm doing things the "hard way," but I usually have...

Serial port access on XT vs AT/Pentium

Ahem.. in addition to the 8250A vs 16550A thing I encountered using Checkit 3.. I had mentioned I was trying to use some serial port code found online. I traced some weirdness happening to the COM port value being passed down a stack of nested init functions in the driver code I'm using...

Serial port access on XT vs AT/Pentium

Thanks again for the reply. Looking forward to checking out the SERTEST source. I believe you're right about the suitability of Checkit 3 against fast machines or various models of UART.. Apparently there are 2 types of UART one may find in these old computers.. the older 8250A and newer...

Serial port access on XT vs AT/Pentium

Thanks for your reply, modem7. Test Method The test method I am using to determine which PC setup work and which ones do not, is use of a null modem adapter between the target PC and a modern PC running either Tera Term or Realterm. Forgot to mention before that I am booting up each PC with the...
