I'm now going to be an AI :)

Except the human doesn't then usually sell or pass on the informaion as their own ramblings.

I'm now going to be an AI :)

So why do I want to be classified as an AI? Because, according to the rule makers around the world, copyright doesn't really apply to AI's, so I can now use anything I like and "train" my self on it, without regard to copyright. Maybe if we all become AI's, and disregard copyright laws someone...

Soldering fallacies -- heat capacity vs. temperature

I still have a scar from leaning on one of these. Strangely, I noticed the smell just before the pain, but don't recall it was like chicken.

Maximum bitrate for storing information on home-quality cassette tapes?

The cassette looks similar to the Teac data tapes, shown here next to a standard audio tape.

    Are these TAG chips?

At least it isn't one of those boards with fake chips and fudged bios that says the tag ram is real.

Did vintage Thinkpads use weaker plastics?

In my experience, many laptops had a hinge design that was poor. Some barely last a year from new. The issue has been common for many years, so it's not just the push to thinner and lighter weight causing it. For some models, I used prevention with epoxy infill to reinforce the area before they...

Soldering fallacies -- heat capacity vs. temperature

For soldering, choose your tool to suit the task. The heated mass available makes a big difference. My heavy duty iron is nicknamed "The Bat" (as in cricket), only 80W but it has the mass to heat bigger items easily. The downside is it is much harder to handle with it's weight. I had a few...

Splicing cat5 cables, yay or nay?

I used solid cat5 for both sprinklers and camera's, and it works fine on the longest 40m run with 24VDC solenoids. Why 24v - less prone to voltage drop, and DC cause it's easier to make into 5v or 3.3v for adding sensors at the far end.

Splicing cat5 cables, yay or nay?

I'd splice and use heatshrink with glue, or normal over hot glue for the final layer

HP 35470A SCSI tape drive repair

You can get more details on the actual fault via a scsi interface, but finding a useful tool can be hard. The early HP Tape Tools around that error might be helful, but later ones just kept everything useful under wraps. Some heavy reading...

HP 35470A SCSI tape drive repair

That uses DDS-1 Dat tapes only. The early HP DAT drives developed mechanical issues very early on in their life, causing alignment problems and became unreliable.
