A Videotel BBS Server Resurfaces from a DEC VAXstation II

So this is a minitel server running on VAX hardware? I don't think I've seen that before. In fact, I didn't think ANY of the old minitel servers still existed!

    Extel E265P / CNCP Telemode 1000 Terminal

So who remembers a year or three back that lot of strange Telex and teletype stuff that was for sale up in the Edmonton area? Well most of that vanished into the Greenkeys ether but another local person bought two of the teletype machines and one of the more basic "Telemode" terminals as all the...

    Four-Phase Systems IV/90

This is insane. I do not get it at all..... When I started this thread in 2022, Four-Phase Systems was a complete unknown. Bitsavers didn't even have much if anything and neither did the Internet in general. I have flipped every stone imaginable to connect with whoever else is left in the world...

Any tips on getting rid of cigarette odor from inside a PC tower?

dishwasher. No I'm serious. Turn the post-wash heater off, pull everything out of the case you don't want to deal with drying off later and cycle it through the dishwasher. The residual detergent should take care of it.

Dial up hardware modem vs software modem

I've had a few of the USB modems are USB in the sense that they have a USB to serail bridge built into them. This later changed as winmodem chipsets came out that provided direct USB support.

Dial up hardware modem vs software modem

Visually, if you grab a modem and it has a DSP, some static ram and a ROM of some sort, it has local intelligence and is very likely a hardware modem. Winmodems have a famously low chip count, typically an Conexant/agere chipset and the analog telephone interface.

Lisa OS + Office System rebuilt from source

Huh. I'm aware that a Lisa could be equipped initially with the AM9512 but I was not aware a Motorola FPU was ever provisioned. Was the library being used for soft-FPU functions?

    Sun MCA-3000 Issues power up

I can't help at all with the gas analyzer calibration portion because I have not performed it myself. At that point there in my case I require a bottle of specifically blended gas and a specific regulator to perform the calibration and I'm not willing to pay that kind of money for a tool I use a...

Simplest way to get an old dialup internet appliance online

I took the Panasonic route like max and others and have a TD816 that sits between the Nokia fiber termination/VoIP gateway Telus gave me and the four original telephone jacks scattered around the house that all used to terminate at the same place but now connect to their own ports on the PBX so...

Commodore - Lets talk about The New Zombie on the block.

So if you have been like me and routinely been touching grass, you would not know that Christian Simpson, a man known by his online media presence of "Retro Recipes" (you may not of ever heard of him but that's because in the Youtube world he falls well under the squelch level for "important"...

Seeking advice on rebuilding GRiD Enhanced Batterypack

With that in mind I'm gonna crib your proof of concept and the battery control module and prototype a larger-scale pack. The 20A 3-cell BCM you selected you can technically double the number of cells from three to six by running two sets of three in parallel. My major caution here is that this...

Most maxed out Pentium III box you still have running.

I spent a couple of years trying to find something external to supplement the internal RAID but had to give up because there was a very narrow window between 8-drive 2U SCSI shelves and SAS and then you gotta find SAS controllers for a system this old.

Did something change in Ebay's Global Shipping Program?

Normally when I buy items from the United States it has to ship using the famously bad Global Shipping Program for international logistics and occasionally repacking. We've all seen this because it meant the item goes on a Magical Mystery Tour across the country and back to ship something as...
