CMI 6426 hard drive misunderstanding parameters

Hello, I wonder why the disk CMI 6426 is labeled as type 2 in the IBM disk table. Type 2 is defined as 615/4/17 as we know. CMI 6426 has 640 cylinders according to several sources. Was it an attempt to fit into predefined IBM tables? R.

IBM PC XT-286 & "The choice of the right hard disk drive"

Hi there, I have another one of my unresolved dilemmas again. Which disk should, according to correctness and historical accuracy, be placed in the IBM PC XT-286? My piece was manufactured in 1986 and came with a non-original ST-251 disk. I know that IBM PC XT-286s were supplied with two...

Early IBM disks and bad blocks

It might be the case. I'm not sure if it was related only to CMI disks or if it was a general measure. So, in this case, the version of DOS doesn't matter?

Early IBM disks and bad blocks

I have one more thing on my mind. Is it appropriate to use low versions of DOS on these disks? For authenticity, I use versions of DOS lower than 3.0 on my IBM 5160 and 5161. However, I know that early versions of DOS had a bug that caused errors in writing (the case of CMI disks in the first...

Early IBM disks and bad blocks

I don't have any stickers indicating bad blocks on the disks. What's the reason for testing the disks only after they've warmed up? I've never heard about this before.

Early IBM disks and bad blocks

Hello, I have a problem with MFM disks, especially the ones offered by IBM for their early PCs. Specifically, I have the Seagate ST-412 and Miniscribe 2012 models installed in IBM PC 5160 and 5161. I only power them on on special occasions, and I always test them using the Spinrite (on level 4)...

Ok it seems that it was caused by some TSR program. When I booted from floppy disk, results was near identical to IBM PC. On Norton Sysinfo score was 1.0, Checkit - 1.00 and 1.01. On the MIPS was little differences, but overall score was 1.00.
