RS-232 Then and Now (Notes and Discussion)

For #2 -- I'll stand corrected. I thought I saw a reference of this using "300 baud" on its keyboard, in one of the Kaypro manuals. But reviewing <https://bitsavers.org/pdf/kaypro/1484-D_KayproTechnicalManual_Dec84.pdf>, yea. So I better example of a (possibly?) RS-232 keyboard was maybe the...

Is COMPUTE!'s Gazette really being revived ?

If you get a chance, read Edwin's editor's notes - it's a heartfelt description of what he is trying to do here. Or if you haven't already, see also He's very open to a variety of vintage-computing related submissions - he wants this community driven, and at these early stages we have a...

RS-232 Then and Now (Notes and Discussion)

I was hoping for a chip magazine with prices from 1988 or early 90's. But I can't imagine them being much cheaper - although I do recall over time, chip prices can fluctuate a lot (like if a certain factory or two catches fire, which has happened).

RS-232 Then and Now (Notes and Discussion)

Neat to see in the recent "Recompiling the Past with William Tooker and Alex Anderson-McLeod" VCF SW video, how they used serial communication to rescue and re-compile the original Lisa OS source code (involving a painful 60hrs at 1200 baud). That's a segment I did forget to include, on how...

RS-232 Then and Now (Notes and Discussion)

I assume you meant blank instead of black - both these seem identical (but do have different file sizes). I'd say the two blank pages are accidental from the scanning process. Another neat thing about that old manual is the use of the sample message "THE QUICK BROWN FOX JUMPED OVER A LAZY...

RS-232 Then and Now (Notes and Discussion)

Couple other updates on this topic of RS-232: - I've added the Bell DataSet (modem) 101C manual into github Eventually this ought to make it over to bitsavers (the document is dated from 1963 and mentions some 1969 revisions, but it covers aspects of the original 101A,B and C)...

RS-232 Then and Now (Notes and Discussion)

I tried searching for contemporary prices of the MAX232, but so far couldn't find any. But other prior discussions had led me to believe these were plentiful and thus, in bulk, relatively cheap (at least in NA). So this is interesting, since I eluded that one reason RS-232 hangs on for so...

    IBM 5110 RAM timings

The IF in the BASIC on these systems is limited (to a control branch). So to check memory, it would be something like:

    IBM 5110 RAM timings

For PALM stuff... More examples are on this page. About 1/3rd down is an example PALM program to display all the character set. That same general reference can be used to write to higher up addresses. It's not document in the IBM manuals, but pressing COMMAND+ATTN during the ROM index counts...

    IBM 5110 RAM timings

Some notes in case it helps: BASIC tokens on this start at address 0x120E Verified the following in the emulator... If you use command RUNS (instead of RUN), numeric arrays will be packed as 4-byte single-precision instead of 8-bit double-precision. However, DIM'd arrays in this BASIC are...

RS-232 Then and Now (Notes and Discussion)

Thanks, yes I didn't state or clarify that part very well. The theme there (in my thinking) was more along the lines of "things that helped make integrating RS-232 easier and cheaper." Somewhat related, I did a video involving 16550 UART and those 75188/75189 chips. Not so much deep details...

RS-232 Then and Now (Notes and Discussion)

I wasn't sure if the topic of RS-232 would be all that interesting - but I've had a lot of positive feedback on the recent discussion about it at VCF. I have the slides (and extra sub-notes and details) archived here (useful maybe if anyone wants to replicate or compare to the RS-232...

    IBM 5110 RAM timings

Hey, @apl-vade-mecum ping'd me and reminded me about this thread. First, wow @Pitou this is incredible work and collaboration, and brave of you to get so very hands on into the memory board of these systems. Seeing your screen shot with the 44KB RWS listed on the console (and extra 4KB used...

    Perifractic wants to buy Commodore

Fair, that's only if he chooses to become a publicly traded company (to try to help pay for things). Imagine that, Commodore ringing the bell at the opening someday. Dell went private and back to public over its lifetime. None of the new retro systems (that I'm aware of) have become...

    Perifractic wants to buy Commodore

I wasn't into the Commodore scene in the 1980s - I grew up in the Tandy Color Computer "ecosystem." But I think all this recent activity is great! I wish Tandy would even get back into the game - down the street from me is Tandy Leather, with a huge store along I-20 selling leather cow...
