    Tandy 1000 SX - MFM/RLL HDD Trouble

Tried this and same result. LLF complete successfully but fdisk fails stating it can't read the drive partition and speedstor fails partitioning it with the same error. I guess it's possible but I just find it hard to believe that both drives are failing with the exact same symptoms. It makes...

    Tandy 1000 SX - MFM/RLL HDD Trouble

I have tried LLF cold, and then left it sit at the SpeedStor screen after it completes (because I fell asleep :) ) and then resumed the next morning, but never tried just letting it sit there and warm up first. I will give that a try thank you!! Anything specific I should do to "warm it up"...

    Tandy 1000 SX - MFM/RLL HDD Trouble

I have a Tandy 1000 SX, and I am having a very, very hard time getting any of the old hard drives that I have working. I have a Seagate ST-238, and a Miniscribe 3438 P. Both are RLL hard drives. I am using a Western Digital WD1002A-27X as the controller card. I don't believe this has anything...

Testing and/or troubleshooting Model III floppy drives

@Patrick.B (TTR) @ldkraemer Well, I started down the path of checking the read/write circuitry and following just the first thing in my mind, I followed the wire coming of J1 back to the head itself. Flipped the drive over and removed the plastic cover to make sure it all looked good, and I...

Testing and/or troubleshooting Model III floppy drives

@Patrick.B (TTR) @ldkraemer Awesome advice guys, thank you! I did already clean and lubricate the rails, and running the BASIC program from another post where Larry provided it, my drive does seek out to 40 and back to zero, so it appears it must be something in the read circuit. The drive...

Testing and/or troubleshooting Model III floppy drives

Larry, I'm working on a very similar issue here with my drive and when I do the above test, it does not softly tick, tick, tick. Upon powering on, it waits a few seconds and then very abruptly just returns to track 0. It's quite rough. Is that normal?

Testing and/or troubleshooting Model III floppy drives

Patrick, would a faulty power cable allow the drive to come on and seek, but fail to read/write? I have a situation where my drive will totally seek from 0/40, but will not read or write. Keeps failing a DIR with Error 04.

    TRS-80 Model 3 - Upper Drive Can't Read/Write

I have a TRS-80 Model III (recently acquired) and the lower drive works just fine. I can boot with TRSDOS boot disk no problem. However, when I try to put a disk into the upper drive and list a directory, it tries to, but just keeps moving the head out and back, out and back. It does this...

    INTRA LT-386SX - Laptop / Motherboard Troubleshoot

Hello everyone, I have an INTRA LT-386SX laptop that I'm trying to troubleshoot. It was given to me by a friend, and even though the power supply they gave me "fits", it's not the original. Therefore, I'm not sure if it's even giving the proper voltage output. I've searched and searched, but...

Commodore 8050 Floppy Drive - Stepper Motor / Head stuck?

Is the drive head moving? On mine, I had to carefully work it back and forth with my fingers until it broke free and started moving. If the drive head is moving and trying to read, I would suggest cleaning the heads really good with q-tip and alcohol. After that I replaced the drive belt as...

    Commodore 64 PSU - Good 9VAC transformer?

I'm building my own Commodore 64 PSU. I have the 5V line working fine, however I'm having trouble finding a good 9VAC 1000mA transformer to use. Maybe I just don't know the correct search terminology. I would prefer to get one that is not encased in a wall plug housing, that way I can wire it...

    Commodore 64 SID Testing

I recently purchased a Commodore 64 from eBay. It's Assembly #250407-04. When I got it, I hooked it up and it seemed to work fine, however I didn't really do any further testing. A week or so ago, I went to play a few games and I noticed that I'm not getting any sound at all. The SID is a...

Commodore 8050 Floppy Drive - Stepper Motor / Head stuck?

So, I when I tried to format a disk in Drive 0, it immediately fails with ?Bad Disk error. This was the drive I had not cleaned out and lubricated yet, I only cleaned the head. I removed it and fully cleaned and lubricated the rails, spinner motor, stepper motor, cleaned the belt etc. Now...

Commodore 8050 Floppy Drive - Stepper Motor / Head stuck?

AndyG, thank you!! I've done the PRINT DS$, but all I've ever gotten was the DOS version printed. Now I know I need to send that command when the light is red after getting the Bad Disk error. I'll do this today and report back! Thanks!!!

Commodore 8050 Floppy Drive - Stepper Motor / Head stuck?

I ran this command and it did cause Drive 0 to "bump", but I'm not sure how to call this for my Drive 1. It doesn't do anything when I run this. However, I was able to repair my broken head carriage metal strap that the stepper motor on Drive 1 uses to move the head back and forth. The...
