    TANDY 4000 Needs love...

The 4000 SX might have a different motherboard, so I'm not certain. The 4000 and 4000 LX use a non-rechargeable 3.6V lithium battery. There are several alternatives for replacement, and I've read somewhere (but haven't tried) a pair of AA batteries will also work.

    TANDY 4000 Needs love...

First pic is overall view, next 3 are closeups of wires, 5th is a pic of the simm solder points that look like they were modified by hand (at the factory). I guess Tandy didn't believe in cleaning up flux... .

    TANDY 4000 Needs love...

This is kind of unlikely, but on mine something must have been a bit off at the factory because there is one column of pins across the simm slots that look like they were soldered by hand, and the joints don't look great. Might reflow those if your board is similar. Also, I can take a picture of...

    TANDY 4000 Needs love...

Make any progress on this? I've been working on a 4000 and a pair of 4000LXs on and off for a year or so. Got one of the LXs working, but I'm really trying to get the 4000 going again. I'm the original owner, and the MB is practically pristine, so I'm tracking down what is apparently a...

Looking for Vectrex 3GE "no buzz" logic PCB or whole machine for reverse engineering

Hi all, I've recently opened all of my Vectrexen, and found a ridiculous number of variations of ways the "PWB 35001A" logic PCB was populated. I have 3 variations of the values for C304-C306 (2 documented at console5, one matches the schematic). There were at least 3 variations of R329, R330...

~RESET signal problem on Vectrex logic board

Well... I lifted 6809 pins 33 and 36, and connected each via 3.3k resistors to +5V rail. Video is screwy (possibly unrelated problem--this machine is a mess), but audio goes through startup and minestorm. I _still_ can't find a short/low-resistance connection between these pins and anything they...

~RESET signal problem on Vectrex logic board

This is interesting. Lifting pin 33 of the 6809 allows /RESET to hit +4V (consequently lifting pin 36 allows it to hit +3.3V, as 33 and 36 are connected via 2x 3.3k resistors). However, I'm still not finding a short (or even low resistance) between pin 33 and anything that seems important. Will...

~RESET signal problem on Vectrex logic board

Yeah, I tried pulling the 6522 and the AY3-8192 to no effect. Removing the 6809 is the only thing that lets /RESET go high. Also tried removing R208 and C224 (great minds... :) ). One thing I noticed last night... the scope was reporting ~80-120mV on grounded pins, but ~200mV on 6809 pin 37...

~RESET signal problem on Vectrex logic board

One other thing I had done after I wrote the original post was I lifted 6809 pin 37, and ~RESET was still driven low.

~RESET signal problem on Vectrex logic board

Hi Dave, Looks like about 160ms from 5V turn on to pin 37 hitting TTL 1. With the 22k resistor,160ms seems reasonable (RC = 484ms)--at least not off by orders of magnitude.

~RESET signal problem on Vectrex logic board

Problem: ~RESET (6809 pin 37) is always low. All the chips in this system work fine in another system. R208, C228, C229, D201, and R201 are all good. Everything in the schematic that is supposed to be on the RESET circuit is connected, and I've done a thorough search for shorts to anything in...

    IBM 5170 power supply repair

Well... I didn't have the right parts to set the load up properly (now on order), however, I put a 10A load on the 5V rail (no other load), and thought it started to smell hot, so I shut it down. I went back to my 2.5A load on 5V (and only the fan on 12V), to see if it was still working, and now...

    IBM 5170 power supply repair

I've had 5R 100W resistor on the 12V rail (plus the fan), and 2R 100W on the 5V rail. Looks like the 5V hasn't been sufficiently loaded according to this chart, so I'll adjust and try again. That 7A seems really high for a minimum. I'll also bump up the 12V since I'm cutting it really close to...

    IBM 5170 power supply repair

I'm working on a PS from a 5170. The DC voltages all have a lot of noise, rapdily varying by 0.1 - 0.2V RMS, also the negative rails are "high" (-3V on the -5V rail, and -10.5V on the -12V rail). The interesting bit is that I took a look at the DC output with an oscilloscope, and all the rails...

    Ramquest 8/16 SIMM compatibility

It also has an 8087 which is pretty unusual, and the Tecmar card is a Captain. Would be funny if it's the same machine. We're going to have to start writing our names inside the cases when they're sold :)

    Ramquest 8/16 SIMM compatibility

Heh... original owner _might_ be one of the replies in this thread. There's nothing obviously anachronistic that I've noticed, right down to the full-height Maxtor boat anchor (non-functional as a HD) in the driver's side drive bay.

    Ramquest 8/16 SIMM compatibility

Did it have a 170M Maxtor MFM HD? The video card is a Video 7. I'm considering whether or not to put the 5160 up for sale after I've looted it, so it might be continuing its journey.

    Ramquest 8/16 SIMM compatibility

I've needed a compaticard for a project (single-system media conversion: all floppy formats, 1/4" tape, zip drive, etc.), and for some reason people are asking as much or more for them than I paid for the whole system. I didn't know what the RamQuest card was (hadn't heard of it until I got it...

    Ramquest 8/16 SIMM compatibility

I just got stupidly lucky with a recent 5160 purchase. The machine contained a nice Tecmar muli-function + memory + clock card and an 8-bit VGA, card but the real gems are a CompatiCard IV, and the aforementioned Ramquest 8/16. The Ramquest will most likely go into a 5170 I'm working on (if it...

    Floppy drive alignment disks

There was some discussion of possibly recreating them, which I think was summarized here: https://forum.vcfed.org/index.php?threads/floppy-drive-alignment-disk-info-maybe-this-can-become-an-faq-on-this-subject.67228/ Failing finding actual alignment disks, maybe I could get someone who believes...
