Compaq Deskpro 486/33M - An adventure

Is it the exact same power supply? Mine seems to be purpose built and has a lot of connectors in weird places :) If they are the same between the Deskpro M series and the Prolinea, that will massively open the possibilities to find a replacement. If it’s the same, I may take it. Please check...

Compaq Deskpro 486/33M - An adventure

Maybe I’m missing something, but my power supply seems to be ok (see photos attached). I really hope that is not the problem with my computer as I don’t think my soldering skills are good enough to recap a power supply…

Compaq Deskpro 486/33M - An adventure

So that is the reason why I cannot find a CR2023 module with the same number than my Dallas! Guess that's also why it says "Real Time RAMified" on the chip... :) I will order a new one and maybe try to mod the old one later... could be an interesting project. On the topic of a socket, it...

    Antivirus Ms-Dos 3.30

Yes, but... But there are a few assumptions there: - that the new AV retained the signatures of MS-DOS viruses - as many MS-DOS executables cannot run in the system the AV requires to run, they represent no threat and can (theoretically) be dropped from the signature DB. - that the user is...

Compaq Deskpro 486/33M - An adventure

Found it!! It's on the IO Board as suspected... it's a Dallas DS1397. I’m weary of buying a new old stock part as the battery may be depleted by now… I’ve seen a few replacement parts that will take CR1220 batteries on eBay , but they don’t seem to be for the same model. Anyone knows where I...

    Antivirus Ms-Dos 3.30

I remember using CPAV (Central Point Anti Virus) in the old days, but nowadays F-Prot is probably the best option as it has a virus database much more up to date than anything else for MS-DOS.

Mistery Switches on the processor board - what are they?

I will investigate a bit more this topic and if I reach no conclusion I'll try to find a Pentium Overdrive to test... I will keep you posted

Compaq Deskpro 486/33M - An adventure

One of the other options I would like to explore is the battery, but unfortunately I cannot seem to find the battery anywhere... the only place where it could be that I haven't checked yet is the IO board under the power supply because it is not easily accessible... Anyone has any idea where...

Compaq Deskpro 486/33M - An adventure

And today it has decided that it will not boot again..... aaaaaaahhhhhhhhh!!!!!! Twolazy, maybe it's time for me to take you on your Power supply offer... I believe I can't yet contact you by PM because I am a new user... (can't see any options to PM you)...

Mistery Switches on the processor board - what are they?

Thanks! It seems my only upgrade path with this board is either a Pentium Overdrive, or procuring one of those "unobtanium" voltage regulators to use with DX4 chips, right?

I will run the memory test later today and will let you know. Thanks for the tip.

Mistery Switches on the processor board - what are they?

Yeah, that's why I was asking. I'm looking to see what are my options when it comes to an upgrade, and if it's 5V only I'm stuck with this processor (or an expensive intel Overdrive), while if 3v is an option I could procure a much cheaper 486DX4... Do you have any documentation on what that...

Mistery Switches on the processor board - what are they?

Hi, Does anyone know what these switches next to the processor do? - see photo This is a Compaq Deskpro 486/33M processor board (part number 129127-001), but I cannot find any manual online that would answer the question… My best guess is that they will allow me to select the voltage, bus...

Compaq Deskpro 486/33M - An adventure

Update: After an endless loop of reboots that took me nowhere, I tried disconnecting the keyboard and that resulted in a message that the keyboard was missing, to press F1 (gotta love this message). I connected the keyboard, pressed F1 and the PC booted normally. Tried the same trick a few...

Compaq Deskpro 486/33M - An adventure

Hi everyone, I have recently bought a Compaq Deskpro 486/33M because it was one of my first computers and I wanted to relive those times. The goal was to upgrade it into a dream machine, but it seems I've hit a snag that I need to address before going on to the upgrades. The machine arrived...
