    Experiments in Aspect Ratios

Yeah VCS windows (linux does) doesn't go full screen for me either, my strange fix is to use OBS with a window capture source and use its fullscreen project mode. Feels a bit overkill just to full screen but it does work. You don't actually need to go live or record, just use OBS as a windowed...

I believe in the Vision software you can tell it what EDID info to provide (at least I've seen in on the ExS software somewhere), that might avoid the low res only without a splinter. Almost certainly for HMDI but SVGA also has the i2c query to the monitor (capture card in this case) to see what...

Yeah sounds like the input settings need tuning. Getting the image pixel clock wrong, will cause shifts and bad image quality. Essentially you need to get the input pixel clock (including blanking) at exactly what its capturing from. Off the top of my head, 720x400 text mode need 900, whereas...

AFAIK the VisionAV are newer chipsets so handle higher resolution, they have some built in sound capture and have a different analog frontend. The mention internal triple buffering but also say low latency so perhaps its not a problem. I think the only real advantage about the E1S and E2S is...

    Retro LAN Party game suggestions

Yeah the racing game, iirc both 1 and 2 support 8 player LAN games. Whether they work today not sure :) We used to use it as great filler game if waiting for someone to arrive or whatever reason we just wanted a quick MP arcade game instead of a shooter.

Screamer comes to mind, 8 player LAN runs on anything Pentium up and IIRC a lot of fun.

VCS for linux has a built in fullscreen mode for that use. Not tried with the Windows version as I use OBS and window capture even when not capturing/streaming simply because I have it all setup. Using OBS for just viewing is fairly useful if you have a complicated audio setup like I do.

I use a program called VCS, made explicitly for capturing retro machine with Datapath cards. The author no longer updates the windows version but the last version works fine for me. You can also use Datapath own program that comes with the drivers Linux: https://github.com/leikareipa/vcs...

They are technically DVI-I ports, so have the digital and analog pins connected. (they also support component via DVI which I've not tried yet). Any passive VGA to DVI dongle works. The four pins near the bar in DVI is for analog. No Audio though, so have to bring that via sound card.

There are new but the are usually available 2nd hand on Ebay for a lot less. I got a E2S (2 DVI inputs) for £50+P&P last month and a E1S (1 input) for a little more. Worth searching for Datapath E1S or E2S or Datapath DGC150C (board name of E2S) or DGC133C (1S). Its basically pro gear from a few...

    3COM 3C509B 3c5x9cfg.exe command to reset ROM enable/address?

I stupidly set the BOOT rom address of a ISA 3COM 3C509B to D0000h which conflicts with my VGA card (I was having a bad day?!). With both in BIOS correctly beeps about no video, but I think continues if I ignore it but no display. I do have a MDA card and monitor but they are in the To Be...

From a recent programming stream, this is a VGA cable capture from a 286 (its Norton Editor is 80x50 text moode). Text requires slightly different settings from VGA 320x200.

Good to hear you've got good output! For any others some info on my setup. I use a Datapath VisionPro for this (common in the retro gaming streaming/YT) and there is a lot of info about this. If you've not seen the RetroRGB website and videos, plenty of info. Essentially DOS and VGA is...

    Retro LAN Party game suggestions

Some (perhaps odd) options. 1. Some old network arcade racing games can break things up a bit 2. CivNet or later networked ones can be a chill long network game 3. Descent is an fun net shooter with a twist (literally). We played this alot mid/late 90s but banned the atom bomb (can't remember...

Imac G4 dead on arrival - bought thinking it was simple repair

I have a working iMac G4, even with a bad battery it should still turn on (I've detached it will restoring and it still booted). As @twolazy said, sounds like the PSU.

HP Vectra ES/12 (old 286 PC)

If you have a scope or a frequency counter, try seeing if the oscillator is oscillating and at what frequency. A faulty oscillator could cause the POST to fail in theory, though it would have to have oscillated a bit to even get a 00 code.

Why does Apple still use tiny SSDs?

Apple has always charged a lot for RAM and SSDs. Even Apple don't pay for extra memory when ordering a new system. It was cheaper to just buy the system through the internal system but order extra memory from Crucial externally :) Or was true about 10 years ago when I was there :D New stuff...

    Pravetz 8m power socket

Hello, I'm restoring a Pravetz 8m and first thing up, is mine didn't come with its power supply. Looking at pictures of real Apple II+ it doesn't have the same power socket. Does anybody know what that socket is? I think I've seen some pin outs but hopefully the socket is something I can...
