    Sun MCA-3000 Modular Computer Analyzer

I tried attaching but the file is to large. I got permission to share it with you, just have to figure out how to do it outside the forum file size requirements.

I will check with the person I got it from. He specifically said he would give it to me if I didn't "sell" the information. I can ask him if I can share it and see what he says. It should be OK, but I want to make sure. He was very helpful, and I don't want to take unfair advantage of that.

California Wanted Miniscribe 3650 or equivalent for SUN MCA-3000

I am relatively new to the forum and don't mean to hack threads, but I don't know how to respond or start a new thread or join one that is appropriate to the discussion we are having.

Just getting back to you. I got a PDF of the service manual for the 3000 and in it they said propane could be used instead of the special gas by changing some of the setup parameters. FWIW. I also know a guy who changed the setup on his oxygen sensor to use a less expensive non-proprietary...

The South Vintage hard disks (again)

I am restoring a SUN MCA3000 engine analyzer and in the day SUN offered a HD (miniscribe 3650) as an option to using 2 3.5" floppys as input for programming. I am not savy enough to know how it was integrated into the system. What I do know is that I have a floppy/HD card in the machine and a...

California Wanted Miniscribe 3650 or equivalent for SUN MCA-3000

I am in the process of restoring an engine analyzer and thinking I would like to input programs from HD rather than floppy discs. Original documentation called for MiniScribe, but any assistance with a similar HD wjould be greatly appreciated.

    Sun MCA-3000 Modular Computer Analyzer

Well, a lot of chasing my tail for nothing. Today I found a floppy label floating around inside the machine. I didn't know what it was. I also had this mystery disc stashed with the backup disks and some disks that handwritten cryptic labels on them. I had looked at the directories on them...

    Sun MCA-3000 Modular Computer Analyzer

I appreciate your help. I had some time to reflect on all of this last night. Before going deeper, I considered my problem. Originally, I wanted to get the floppy drives working so I could load the programs from the floppy discs that came with the equipment. I have gone way off from that...

    Sun MCA-3000 Modular Computer Analyzer

OK. Well after spending all day looking and learning I have made a decision. I will get an XT-IDE card and an interface adapter and use it to drive an SD card. I could use it to drive my HD, but the documentation on how to do it with the SD card seems to be more friendly to me, the novice...

    Sun MCA-3000 Modular Computer Analyzer

I am reading and watching videos about XTIDE. It seems that may be a way to go, either with the Caviar 21600 or maybe getting an IDE to flash adapter and plugging it onto the controller board. If I use the Caviar HD, I would need to get an external floppy drive to create a bootable floppy to...

    Sun MCA-3000 Modular Computer Analyzer

I looked up the specs on the 4 HD's listed on the "Field Installation Instructions" (see link in previous post) and they were all 42-43MB HD's. with varying numbers of heads and 17 sectors per track. The WD Caviar 21600 I have has 16 heads with 63 sectors per track and 1624.66 MB. That does...

I have been trying out Copilot AI and asking it questions about the MCA-3000 and one of the references it brought up was this: https://www.snaponequipment.com/Common/Instructions/Product/MDSHDCD.pdf Would like your take, particularly on the part that addresses setting up the HD utilysing a...

    Sun MCA-3000 Modular Computer Analyzer

I just tried hooking up the HD. Plugged it into the controller card, attached power. No disc in either A or B. Turned on the 3000 and on boot-up it gave a "flex disc error" and would not proceed. Turned off the 3000. Unplugged the HD. Restarted 3000 and got into setup mode. This is the...

    Sun MCA-3000 Modular Computer Analyzer

What if the HD I purchased has data on it and it was not wiped before I purchased it? Will that mess up, or possibly take up so much room on the drive that my stuff will either not fit on it or will interfere with the HD booting to the SUN boot program? Does that make sense?

    Sun MCA-3000 Modular Computer Analyzer

What I hear you say is, do not put anything in the floppy drives and if in setup I have activated the C drive it will go through the A and B drives and finding nothing there go to the C drive and if it sees a file that lets it boot it will boot from there? Question: In the setup for the C...

    Sun MCA-3000 Modular Computer Analyzer

My "guest" did not format or do anything with the HD. He was unsure with what he knew without getting online, if the HD would work with the controller and the 286. I was not going to look a gift horse in the mouth so to speak. He got me past the floppy not reading at all to getting the SUN...
