So I saw this mysterious "80288" chip mentioned in a few places, unfortunately, none of them trustworthy...
Some claim it's a CPU, like 80286, only with 8-bit data bus.
Others claim it's some support chip allowing for 80286 to utilize 8-bit peripherals.
Where's the truth?
 
No such beast, as far as I know.

Perhaps the confusion is with the 82288, the bus controller for the 80286, or the 8288, the controller for the 8086/88.

Had there been an 80288 CPU, it would have sold like hotcakes as part of XT upgrade kits.

Intel was even slow to introduce the 80188 after the 80186.
