Trying to recover data from an old First Class Peripherals Sider (10 MB). The power supply was smoked and it appears to have damaged the logic board so I'm trying to find a Sider to use for parts.

Location of where you are at, and what kind of drive 10meg was in the sider? How was it formatted? What kind of data are you trying to pull off?
If it is a SCSI HD, formatted in ProDos you might/ should be able to take the drive out and put it in another SCSI case and use RamFast or the Apple HS card to acess it.
Have not pulled apart a Sider to see what kind of HD they have them. I do not know enough about them to know if they were hard coded to the size and all the particulars of a certain drive like the the Vucan drives. Being a SASI I would think it would be an SCSI drive. I remember reading in the manual that you can use the Ramfast card to interface it, if you did a few things.

The drive is a model 4000 Xebec. The format is ProDos but it may also have some UCSD Pascal files. The primary goal is to recover the document files with a secondary goal of resurrecting the drive and putting it back into service on the Apple //e. At this point, it appears the logic/controller board my be damaged since the drive doesn't spin-up when power is applied.

Thanks from Denver.

Well looking around there is none for sale at the moment.

However their was one listed on this board. Here is the URL. A 10 meg one

If you do get the data off you might want to look into getting something like a CAFF card for the IIe to store the data on. Even another working Sider might not last as long as a CompactFlash.

I have some 20megers. Have not tried them in while. Would like to see if they the HD would work in a SCSI case.

Did a little checking on the other newsgroups. Seems that the HD was an MFM type. Also that quite a few power supplies of the sider failed over the years. That a few used other power supplies to fix their Siders. Even using a IIe's power supply to get it going. Was not pretty that it was outside of the sider. So replacing the power supply with a suitable AT one that would fit in the case.
CO is a bit far. Why do you think the logic board has failed?

There is one listed one EBay for sale. Do not know the person selling it. Feed back is good. Does not say when it last tested out. You could ask the seller about it. Shipping price is good also.
Here is the title and Ebay number.

Geo3,

I tried to acquire the Sider @ vintage-computer, but Matt had sold/traded it.

Initially, I thought the power supply was the entire problem since it had a couple of cooked components. I installed a new supply and even tried a bench supply without luck. Next, I planned on moving to the logic board in hopes that it wasn't the drive mechanism. One potential problem is that I assumed the power leads to be: red=5v, orange=12v, black=ground. Do you know if that's correct?

In my research on this problem, I did come across the Compact Flash drives. You're right, it may be the way to go once I get the files recovered.

FYI, I contacted an HD recovery service and it would run about $1600 for them to recover the files. Whew... That won't happen any time soon.

I'll keep an eye on the ebay Sider. When I checked, it was up to about $50.

Thanks for your help on this...

Hi,
Did you win the auction? If you did I hope the drive is good. If it is bad. I have heard that if you put them in a freezer (wrapping it and putting it in a Zip Lock Bag) and leave them there for a day then take them out in a very low humidity enviroment. They may work for a while to get info out. You would have to watch out for moisture/frost.

Take Care,
George
