Can Someone Help Me Scan This?

Hi everyone, I am trying to connect to this Motorola MC68HC711E9 CFU2 on my engine module. I only opened this module so I could see what processor it was. The one I want to read and flash is not going to be opened up like this. I only have the option of connecting to the 12-pin spot where the vehicle harness plugs into (Power, CanHi, Canlo, Ground)

The diagnostic software for the manufacturer of the machine reads it just fine, but doesn't allow editing the file at all. This is how it is setup now. What software can I use? Keep in mind what I want to edit will be in a closed module, so a PICkit will not work. Here is a layout of my setup.

So you are looking to edit a signed firmware prior to writing it to an ECU and are hoping to do so without having to open the other module up?

Not really a vintage thing in this instance but it's raising a bunch of flags in my head because it sounds like you are trying to flash a tune to an ECU without tampering with the factory seal. Unless we know what you are trying to do most of us won't touch that with a 50-foot pole.

This isn't something nefarious, but I understand what you are saying. It is for my snowmobile, and is 20 years old. I am trying to edit my calibration to remove the rev limiter and timing adjustments. I just do not know how it was modified 20 years ago to do it, that's all.

I was just looking into this for a Land Rover BCU. There are some docs out there on the web that show what pins to connect to, but it looks like there are also some tools to do it. I don't own any of this equipment, I was just curious how it worked, since it looked like the BCU didn't have any EPROM or flash, but turns out it's in that microcontroller.

Here is a doc that shows some pinouts: https://www.totalcardiagnostics.com/files/shop2/carprog/Motorola_HC11_Programmer_Manual.pdf

If you are wanting to do this without opening the module, you'd have to see if the pins you need are exposed externally. They might not be, especially if the manufacturer didn't anticipate changing the programming. I know on the older land rovers, my scan tool can make some changes in the BCU module, but is it really writing the MCU externally? I do not know.

Thank you Jafir!! You are correct, in my mind I may be overthinking it. But I was wondering if I could just connect wires to can hi, can lo, power and ground terminals that stick out of the module itself. These links are very helpful, but I still need to investigate more!

If it helps any, when I scan the module itself, my can protocol is J1939.

Nearly all CAN traffic these days is J1939, so that doesn't tell you much.

If it is possible (a big IF) to read and reprogram that module over CAN, the tools are going to be very specific. I would ask on a forum dedicated to your make/model of snowmobile.

Thank you for the helpful responses so far :) I am the first person to dig deep into this, as no one on the snowmobile forums have tried to this extent to modify the map files. People used to just send them to the race department at the manufacturer for a "flashed" ecu update. The sled is 20yrs old, but a lot of us still ride them, and race them. There's a lot of reading to do! I thought this forum might be helpful as I found some posts here through google regarding the HC11 Motorola MCU. I have posts on many different forums looking for assistance. I am so close!
