I fear there is something worng with my IBM 6180 color plotter. I turn it on it grinds the belt, as like it has no clue where the "head" is at. After sometime of this grinding, It will stop and just stall out and turn it's self off. If I Turn it back on it will grind somemore and turn off, If I turn it on again, it will grind less and less with each turn on somtimes stop in the middle and stall (turn off), after a while (turn on trun off's ect) it stops and appers to work but if you unplug it or feed a paper in it, it dose it all over again.

I know that grinding the belt can't be good. (grinding the belt = head motor spining while the head is at home. thus grinds the teeth on the belt and motor shaft)

Any Clues how to fix? Any way to reset the motor and home spot?

I'm not familiar with that particular plotter.
Any chance of a link to either a service manual or a nice pic of it with the top cover off so I can see the transport ?

Try ( if it's not already ) disconnecting the communication cable from the plotter then power the printer and see if it will find the start position.

The only other thing I can think of is there a thin strip of plastic that looks like a bar code streaching in the plotter? If so then wipe this down with a dry lint free cloth.

I'm also not familiar with this plotter, and I haven't been able to find a photo on it.

On the right hand side, when the pen is "fully right", right beside the "up / down" stepper belt, I see a tiny little rectangle thingie! Maybe some kind of magnetic or field effect sensor???

As in, pen is fully right sensor. The metal support part of the pen mech. would be right on top of that little thingie, hence my guess on a magnetic type sensor.

I have a PDF from another plotter that shows you what the sensors typically look like. It might help with trying to find it. It's 132K, anyone that wants it, PM me.

If my little rectangle thingie isn't it, then there must be a reed switch or something like that on the underside, where the pen head would slide over the top of it. I would guess it would be towards the back of the unit as to be close to the top of the pen head.
